Ancestor of U.S. President James A. Garfield.
Was Representative of Watertown 9 times between 1689 and 1717, and he held numerous municipal appointments. His house and barn were burnt in the night of 29 Mary 168?, by his servant, Joshua, and on Apr 24, said Joshua was discovered with his throat cut, with a knife in his hand. In 1704 his fence was burnt by Christopher Tompson, who was ordered to be sold into neighbouring colonies.

Early Settlers of Watertown.
The John Bridge Family, Appendix No. 1, d. aged seventy-four years; was one of the most prominent men of his time in Watertown. He was Captain of Militia, was Representative to the General Court nine times, Selectman twenty years, Town Clerk twelve years, and on the Committee to locate the boundary between Watertown and Newton, Mar. 1, 1704-5. In the earnest and protracted controversy concerning the location of the meeting house, which arose in 1692, he was the leader of the party inhabiting the middle precinct, now Waltham. The town was then divided into three military precincts, the second or middle precinct being sometimes called "the precinct of Captain Garfield's Company." Dec. 27, 1792 (sic), Mr. William Bond and Lieut.Benjamin Garfield were appointed by the town to apply to the Governor and Council to obtain a committee to determine the controversy.
