W. L. Brown, of Lime Kiln Farm, has a radio with a Loud Speaker, and many
people are enjoying audiences at his home, hearing the latest important news,
music, song, speeches, etc. Mr. Brown is wide awake, and hopes to help develop
enterprises for Gravette. He is an experienced cold storage and creamery man,
besides electrical engineer and radio expert. Mr. Brown sees advantage for
Gravette in several ways, to be gained by having a day current (electricity) at
the city plant. The News Herald likes Mr. Brown's boosting spirit and will
welcome more just like him.

OZARK LUMBER CO. DOUBLES ITS CAPACITY
W. L. Brown's Plant Running Steadily Turning Out Binder Slats, Etc.
The Ozark Lumber Company, which is the "brain child" of W. L. Brown who
conceived the idea some years ago and started with a $360 debt, has become a
real going concern, all paid for, with a capacity double what it was a year
ago, and employing seven men now all the time. This idea of making binder
slats resulted from Mr. Brown's experience as a traveling salesman in the grain
sections of Kansas and other states. Starting out an orphan boy, meeting with
failures and reverses, he has persisted in this his own creation, until the
Ozark Lumber company now has patrons in all the middle west, south into Texas
and east into Indiana.
Orders pour in, we saw them, for slats ranging from 2000 to 1,000,000 or
200,000 (carlots) but only orders below the carlot can yet be filled; like, for
example a 42,500 order now for Kansas. A 25,000 order for Iowa is ready to
deliver. Much material, ash, in particular, comes from Mr. Brown's saw mill
near Jay, Oklahoma.
Here the plant is partly operated by an oil engine at about 90 cents per 24
hours, and partly by electricity. Two additions to the plant have been built,
a lot of buzzing machinery added; a blower carries off the waste, and a large
kiln is busy drying timbers.
Now employed are Ed Gordon, foreman,; E. W. Long, J. M. Sanders, John Russell,
Clinkenbeard boy, Bob, Ben and Mr. Brown; but often 14 men are employed. With
a vision of a plant to handle the carlot orders, Mr. Brown, presses on with one
of the greatest opportunities for a real enterprise that any Ozark raw material
affords.

Walter L. Brown, 61 years old, died suddenly Thursday morning at his home in
the north part of Gravette.
Walter L. Brown, 61 year old Spanish American war veteran died in his sleep
Thursday morning from a heart attack. He was found early this morning by Mrs.
Brown, when she went to awaken him.
Mr. Brown was born in Olpe, Kansas, and came to Gravette about 20 years ago,
where he operated the Ozark Lumber Products company, until just recently.
He served in the Spanish American war in Company L, U.S. Volunteers 32nd; was
a charter member of Rice W. Means Camp No. 19 U.S.W.V. at Bentonville. He also
served the Department of Arkansas as junior and senior vice commander and in
June, 1941, was elected as state commander.
He is a member of Bethel Lodge 232, F. and A.M., of Gravette, and is a member
of the Methodist church.
Besides his widow, he is survived by five sons: Andrew A., U.S. Navy,
Norfolk, VA; Almon, U.S. Army, Sedro Woolley, Wash.; Lester, Burlington, Wash.;
Bob and Ben, Sedro Woolley, and one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Dewey, Sedro
Woolley.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Pyeatte Funeral home.
FUNERAL NOTICE - GRAVETTE NEWS HERALD - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1942 NO. 30
Funeral service for Walter L. Brown, 61 years old, Arkansas state commander of
the United Spanish War Veterans, who died of a heart attack at his home
Thursday morning, was held Tuesday afternoon at the Gravette auditorium.
The service was conducted by Rev. Porter Weaver, pastor of the local Methodist
church assisted by Rev. Fred Hamilton of Siloam Springs.
Military rites were accorded the Spanish war veteran at the grave in the
I.O.O.F. cemetery. Burial was made under the direction o the Pyeatte Funeral
service.
Pall bearers were S. W. Mason and John Fitzpatrick, Gravette; Arch W. Law and
C. A. Dana, Centerton; C. W. Courtney, Siloam Springs, and Ed Holzencamp,
Springdale, all Spanish war veterans. Several members of the Gravette American
Legion post served as honorary pall bearers.
The following document is transcribed from Will Record H, Page 267, Benton
County, Arkansas:
WILL OF WALTER L. BROWN
I, Walter L. Brown, of Gravette, Benton County, Arkansas, being over the age of
twenty-one years and of sound and disposing mind and memory, do hereby make,
publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking all
wills hereto before made by me at any time.
1. I direct that all my just debts be paid as speedily as possible.
2. I give and bequeath to my children as follows, To, Andrew A. Brown, one
dollar, Lester M. Brown, one dollar, Margaret M. (Brown) Dewey, one
dollar, to Almon J. Brown, one dollar, Robert E. Brown, one dollar, and
Benjamin B. Brown, one dollar.
3. I give, bequeath and devise unto Mary M. Brown, my wife, all my personal
property remaining after the bequests in clause one and two have been
distributed, I also devise all real property of what so ever description I
may now own or hereafter acquire to my wife Mary M. Brown.
4. I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint, Mary M. Brown, my wife, as
executrix of my estate under this my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of March, 1937,
in the presence of Frank Hidy and Nathan R. Bickford who at my request attest
the same in my presence
