John Alexander was an original settler of County Donegal, Ireland. He was born circa 1590 and believed to have descended from The House of MacAlexander in Tarbert, Kintyre, W. Scotland. He settled at Eredy, near Raphoe, Ireland. He had four sons, Robert, Andrew, Archibald and William and several more unknown.

Migrated to Ireland then America. First to Pennsylvania then to Virginia where he purchased 6,000 acres extending from Huntington Credek Warehouse to Arlington. First called Hunting Creek Farmhouse, then Belle Haven and lastly Alexandria (Arlington Plantation)

Lady Elizabeth, daughter of Archibald Boyd (son of Lord Robert Boyd who was regebt if Scotland in 1466. They had Lady Elizabeth Douglas, who married Alexander Alexander of Menstrie in 1545 and had Lord William Alexander, born 1580, knighted in 1613, died 1640; progenito of the Virginia Alexanders. John Alexander, his son married Frabces Ashton and had Robert, born 1618, who married Ann Fowle and had Gerald Alexander, who married Mary Dent and had Nancy Alexander, who married Fielding Lewis, oldest son of Colonel Fielding Lewis and his wife Betty"

Having been present, 11 May 1326, in the Irish Parliament held at Kilkenny, he went to the monastery at At hassel, where he died 29 July 1326 and was buried shortly before 29 August.
