Isaac Allerton was born in England about 1583-1586, but his parentage has not been identified. He may be related to Mayflower passenger John Allerton, but no relationship between them has been documented. Isaac Allerton is found in several Leyden records, and his sister Sarah married Degory Priest there on the same day as Issac's marriage to Mary Norris.A John Allerton and a Robert Allerton can also be found in Leydenrecords.
On 18 June 1618 in Leyden, Isaac Allerton, tailor, made a sworn statement for Nicholas Claverly, witnessed by Degory Priest. On 9 January 1619, Isaac Allerton made agreement with Alice Gallant, widow of John Hooke and current wife of Henry Gallant, to apprentice her twelve-year old son John Hooke to Isaac Allerton, to learn the tailor trade. John Hooke came with Isaac on the Mayflower, but died the first winter.

(1) We long thought that the following family took its name from the Lanarkshire town of Hamilton. However, we have since seen the suggestion that the family gave its name to Hamilton, rather than the other way around, with Hamilton possibly being a corruption of either Hambleton (there being villages of that name in North Yorkshire, Lancashire & Rutland) or Hambleden (a village in Buckinghamshire). TSP (Hamilton) reports that there was a place called Hamilton in Northumberland (which "belonged to the Umphravilles"), which may have provided the progenitor of the family, but makes it clear that there is little evidence to support any claim for this family's early origins, adding that "So far as record or charter evidence is available, the first undoubted ancestor of the Hamiltons was Walter Fitz Gilbert".
(2) 'The House of Hamilton' by John Anderson reports that the following Gilbert may have been of the family of the Beaumont/Bellomont Earls of Leicester (see Beaumont01). [It is clear that this matter has long been the subject of much speculation. We have seen several suggestions as to how the families were connected, for example: that Gilbert was son of Sir William de Hambleton who was an illegitimate son of Robert de Beaumont, 4th Earl. However, little if any 'proper' evidence is ever given to support such a claim.] TSP (Hamilton) refers to such suggestions and implies that at least part of such claims came from a similarity of armorial bearings (the use of cinquefoils) but then notes that the same argument would also work (better?) for a connection to the above-mentioned Umphravilles. We suspect that the 'Beaumont origin' claims are all spurious and fear that the true origins of this family will never be known.
