Ancestor of U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes.
Richard was the original immigrant from England or Wales. He came to Mass. sometime between 1628 and 1635, (one source gives 1635), was in Cambridge briefly in the spring of 1636, then moved to Concord in 1636.In 1684 Richard made testimony in regard to the settlement of Concord. This was the year of distress when the colonists were told that theirlands were forfeit to the King. He had two wives, the first named Elizabeth, (though the LDS has her name as Ann), and the second namedMary. McCracken has a convincing argument that all the children were Elizabeth's.
Richard was the last survivor of the original settlers ofConcord and lived in a house on Lexington Road. He died on June 6, 1709,about the same time as his daughter Abigail, and four of his grandchildren. He was about 100 years old. Some of his descendants may have migrated from Concord to the valley of the Connecticut as far asSaybrook. Others went to New Orleans, but they all apparently left theUnited States. There were other settlements in Sharon, Simsbury, and Granby.
Helen Willden of Utah sent some information, being herself a descendant of Hannah Rice, (Peter, Richard), and Samuel Wilcoxson. I have been contacted by two other descendants of Hannah and Samuel also. I believe other lines of descent are still present in the U.S., but probably none with the last name "Rice".
