Gospatric de Dunbar, 1st Earl of Dunbar; living c1115, when he seems tohave been a signatory to the Charter of Scone by which the Abbey of Sconewas founded; killed leading his men of Lothian in Scottish defeat by theEnglish at the Battle of Standard (near Northallerton, North Yorks) 23Aug 1138. EARLDOM OF DUNBAR (I)
GOSPATRIC DE DUNBAR, EARL [SCT], 3rd son being younger brother of Dolfin(expelled 1092 from Carlisle), was apparently one of the nine signatoriesto the charter of Scone (circ. 1115), as also, about a year later (underthe style of Gospatricus, frater Dolfini), to the Inquisitio Davidis. Heappears to have held the position of an EARL, though there is no recordof the title of the Earldom, nor is he ever called Earl in any knowndocument in his lifetime. In a charter, confirmed 16 August 1139 (afterhis death), to the monks of Durham, he is styled "Gospatricus Comes,frater Dolfini," being, in the heading thereof, called "Gospatricussecundus Comes frater Dolfini." This Earl is doubtless the summus duxLodonensium (the leader of the men of Lothian) slain at the battle of theStandard 22 August 1138, fighting against the English at Cowton Moor,near Northallerton.
