! COL. THOMAS MARSHALL (John2, Thomas1); b. 2 Apr 1730 in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., VA; m. Mary Randolph Keith, daughter of Rev. James Keith and Mary Isham Randolph, 1754 in Fauquier Co., VA; d. 22 Jun 1802 in Kentucky, at age 72. He was a surveyor. He was a Lieutenant of Volunteers during French & Indian War. He was superintendant of Lord Fairfax's Estate. He was High Sheriff of Fauquier Co. in 1767. He organized the Culpepper Minutemen. He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. He served at Valley Forge. He succeeded to Gen. Mercer's command when Mercer was killed at Battle of Germantown.
! He fought at the Battle of Brandywine where he commanded the Third Virginia Regiment. He was a member of the 1776 Virginia Convention that declared independencein Virginia. He resided in 'Oak Hill', Fauquier Co., VA. He resided in 1785 in Woodford, KY. He was Member of the Virginia Legislature in 1787 in Fayette, Kentucky. MARY RANDOLPH KEITH was born on 28 Apr 1737. She died on 19 Sep 1809 in Mason, KY, at age 72.
! All historical records show that Thomas Marshall came to live with his family at The Hollow in 1765 and that he lived there, for the most part, until 1773, when he and his family moved to "Oak Hill" several miles to the east. The Hollow sits on a large (322 acre) piece of agricultural land on the northeast corner of the I-66 interchange at Markham, Virginia. Other than The Hollow, the land contains no residential structures.
! Colonel Thomas Marshall was born on 30 April 1730 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, to Captain John Marshall and his wife, Elizabeth Markham. A childhood friend and neighbor was George Washington, and the two would become close friends for the remainder of their lives.
! After the birth of their third child, they moved to a lease on a Lee grant near present-day Markham and built a small house known as "The Hollow", near the banks of Goose Creek, in the early 1760's. The house, which still stands, measured 16 x 2O feet - had two rooms on the first floor and two rooms in the loft. Here, the next seven children were born. It is hard to imagine the parents and ten children living in four small rooms. It must have been a lively household!
