ROBERT BRATTON
From Robert Moss, 901 William, Omaha, NE 68108 on 19 Jan
1996:
"Robert was the first Brattain to become a Quaker. He was
received into the Friends Church on 31 Oct 1767 at the New
Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford Co., NC, preparatory to
his marriage into the Quaker Millikan family. At his
marriage only his bride's relatives signed as witnesses.
Robert remained a devout Quaker throughout his life. Robert
and Mary moved to White Water Monthly Meeting in Wayne Co.,
IN, in 1810. Mary died soon after the move. Robert was
listed in the 1779 tax list of Randolph Co., NC, as taxed for
200 acres. This was probably the 220 acre tract on Muddy
Creek, located northwest of present day Randleman, deeded to
him by his parents on 21 Sep 1784 (Randolph Co. Deeds, 2:80).
Robert divided this land into three tracts and transferred 64
acres to his son John on 23 Sep 1795, 69 acres to his son
Benjamin on the same day; and 87 acres to James Frazier of
Guilford Co. on 24 Mar 1796 (Randolph Co. Deeds, 6:188, 209,
7:258). Robert also bought 61 acres on Polecat Creek in
Guilford Co. in 1785, but sold it in 1787, at which time he
was know as the school master of Randolph County. Robert
lived on his Muddy Creek farm at least until 1795 and
possibly with one of his sons after selling the farm. On the
same ay he sold the last portion of his farm to James
Frazier, he also sold him personal property including a set
of surveying instruments. Robert received a deed to one acre
in the town of Johnsonville on 16 Sep 1790 from the town's
trustees. The Randolph County court house was originally in
Johnsonville, now a suburb of Randleman, where Brown's Cross
Roads is now located. In the 1790 census of Randolph Co.,
the family is shown as three males 16 and over, three males
under 16, and four females. The family is also listed in the
1800 census. In the 1820 census of Wayne Co., IN, Robert's
family only contains himself and his second wife Hannah.
Robert and Hannah had no children."

Stirnet.com note:
Thanks to a site visitor (PK, 22.10.07) for drawing our attention to recent research (by J.P. Ravilious) which indicates that Agnes was of this family and that, even though the wife of Sir John Douglas is normally identified as Agnes, widow of John de Monfode, it was her niece Agnes who married Sir John.
