JAMES BRATTON
USED TURTLE SHELL FOR CRADLE
by James Bratton

This is the title of an article printed in the Marshall Mountain Wave newspaper
dated August 20, 1919, at Marshall, AR.

Editor, Mountain Wave:

I herewith give you a short sketch of my life.

I was born in Hardin Co. Tennessee, Oct. 3, 1838. My parents moved from there
to Arkansas, leaving Tennessee when I was about a month old, and landed on the
Buffalo River on Christmas Day with two uncles of mine, Silas Rose (husband of
Rachel Bratton) and Thomas Massey (husband of Martha Ann Bratton, called Patsy)
and all settled on Buffalo River. My father settled a place just below the
mouth of Spring Creek; Silas Rose was just across the river from the mouth of
Spring Creek. And Thomas Massey settled the place that is known as the John
Butler Farm.

My father stayed on Buffalo until 1839 when he moved to Marion Co. and settled
a place on what is known as Cowan Barrens. He stayed there 2 years and then
moved to the forks of Long Creek and Big Creek and stayed there only 1 or 2
months, then moved to Wiley's Cove (now Leslie) and settled on a piece of land
that John Bryant owns now, and a man named Smith gave him a horse for his
claim. Then my father bought the old home place in the Cove from one Thornton
Dean, the place where I was raised and learned to plow and make rails. I
lived there till I married. My first wife was the daughter of King Hatchett.
(Dicey A. Hatchett) My second wife was the daughter of Jessie Sanders, and my
3rd wife was the daughter of Page Hatchett, now my present wife.

This is not a dream as Uncle Vol Williams' was.

I first married in 1859 and my father gave me some land and I moved
on it the 1st day of January, 1860. I lived on it till October 8, 1918 when I
sold it and moved to Leslie.

When my father came here it was Arkansaw. There was lots of game of all sorts:
bear, panthers, wolves, deer, turkeys, coons, fox, wildcats, possums, skunks
and squirrels.

My father was a pretty good hunter. He brought a muzzle loading rifle with him
and it was flint and steel those days. While living on Buffalo (River) he
killed enough bears to have all the time and fish the same. When he moved from
Buffalo he left a trough full of honey. While we lived there my mother said I
had forty shakes of ague (chills from malaria?) and never missed a day while we
lived on the river.

My father was fishing one day. He was standing on what he thought was a rock
covered with moss. After being there a while, the rock began to move off with
him; and on investigating he found he had been standing on the back of a large
turtle. He killed the turtle and the shell was large enough to make a cradle
for me to be rocked in.

My father also raised a pet bear and whenever the bear found me outside alone,
it would catch me up and throw me down and start to sucking my ears.

I never killed as many bear or deer as my father for he killed 80 in one month.
My father raised a family of 5 boys and 2 girls--had some other children to die
when small. The two girls are still living. Three of the boys and one of the
girls are living in Searcy County, Arkansas. One of the boys in Little Rock,
and 1 girl in Oklahoma.

Myself, John Bratton and France (Francis M. and John were brothers of James
Bratton) were conscripted into the Confederate Army (Civil War) --first in
Confederate Army, then enlisted in the Union Army ... and were with the Army
until Prairie Grove Battle. Then ran way, and came home and worked in a Salt
Petre works on Buffalo and Big Creek until Dec. 1863. And when Cat. Naypner,
out recruiting for the Union Army came into the Cove, I and John and France
went out with him and stayed with the Federal Army until we were discharged.
There were four of us brothers in the Federal Army (Benjamin Bratton was the
4th) and we went through and neither of us got a scratch or hurt and all are
still living. I and John's family moved to Lewisburg where we were stationed.
France and Ben were single men when the war was over and were discharged.

We came home the summer of 1865. Our houses were all burned and fences down.
I had 2 head of horses, 1 cow and calf, 1 hog, 1 barrell of flour and about
$30.00 in greenbacks, and that was all. But there were lots of deer, some bear
and lots of small game and turkeys in the woods. I got my part of them.

I would work for a week or two, then hunt and kill turkeys and deer and hunt
bee trees. I found lots of them. Some of the trees had as much as 125 lbs. of
honey in them.

Now I will give you a sketch of my hunting - when I was a boy, I killed 9 grown
wild turkeys in one day in this Cove (Wiley's) with a muzzle loading rifle.
About a months before I was first married I killed 50 squirrels in one day.
Another day I killed 9 squirrels off one tree with a rifle that John Bratton
has now. I hunted a part of 2 weeks and killed 365 squirrels, crows, hawks,
and owls.

It was just after the War when I killed my first bear. I killed this bear in
this Cove, up what is now called Happy Hollow. My father (Benjamin Bratton
Sr.) John Bratton and I were out coon hunting. John went back home when it got
daylight and my father and I went deer hunting. We got out to where Mr. Bruner
lives now and has an apple orchard. There we saw fresh bear signs and went on
around the side of the mountain and saw some deer and shot one. Our dogs broke
after the deer and away they went down the hill. After a while the dogs treed
something; but before I got to them I heard the dogs having a fight with some
creature and they all quit but one old dog.

I followed after them and they turned down Happy Hollow and came down to where
Frank Hollobaugh now lives. There they changed from one mountain to the other.
By this time I had got rather close and I called the dog, and just then caught
sight of an object up in a cedar tree which turned out to be a bear. The bear
came down from the tree when it heard me and started on and I followed.

The old dog was fighting the bear and when I thought I was close enough to hit
it I shot at him and hit him. Walking up a tree the bear went, but he soon
came down and away he went and I after him.

Loading my old rifle with a naked ball, as I ran along, I got on the hill. The
bear was under a bluff, lying on his back, growling and grunting, and I shot at
him again but missed him. He came out with a vim after that old dog and there
they had it for some distance, then the bear got in a tree top and lay down.

I loaded my old rifle again, and next time I took better aim and shot him in
the head. This was my first bear hunt, but since then I have been in several
bear fights with dogs, and one panther fight. I have gone into several caves
and killed bears; and one time climbed a tree and caught 4 bear cubs off the
tree. I had them and the dogs to fight all around me, and not more than 20
feet from me. One time I went into a cave and shot a bear 9 times, and it came
out and fought 9 dogs for about a quarter of a mile before the dogs stopped
him, and as he caught a dog up I put a pistol to his head and killed him.

I have helped to kill and capture 40 or 50 bears in my life. There is some fun
in bear hunting and lots of hard work.
