INDEX

[4388] U.S. President Zachary Taylor is a descendant.

He [Roger de Toeni] married,(h) before 1255, Isabel. He died before 12May 1264, when Isabel's marriage was granted to Edmund, the King's son.She was living,February 1264/5. [Complete Peerage XII/1:771-2,(transcribed by Dave

A contract of marriage between Roger, then aged 3, and Alice, daughter of Humphrey deBohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, was confirmed by the King,30 June 1239. According to the Fundatorum Progenies of Llanthony thismarriage did take place and Alice was buried in the chapter house of Llanthony Priory outside Gloucester. However, nothing more is known of Alice and, as statedabove, Roger's marriagewas granted to the Queen, 26 April 1242.In fact,Alice clearly did marry Roger, and was the mother of his son and heir, Ralph, as shown by the evidence below. The date of "before 1255" for Roger's marriage to Isabel, which is based on the belief that she was Ralph's mother, is therefore also incorrect

The marriage contract referred to above is printed in The Beauchamp Cartulary Charters1100-1268, ed E. Mason, p.214 (1980), together with a grant by Humphrey de Bohun to Roger de Tosny, of the manors of Newton (Tony) and (East) Coulston, Wiltshire, in marriage with his daughter Alice (p.216). The manors were given in free marriage to be held by Roger and his heirs by Alice, andwere to revert to Humphrey if Alice died without issue. This grant is dated by Mason to probably c.1251, when Roger reached the age of 14.

The previous grant to Queen Eleanor on 26 April 1242, referred to byComplete Peerage, was in fact a grant of the lands only, not of themarriage and lands [Cal. Patent Rolls, 1232-47, p.283]; itis referred toagain as a grant of the lands in a subsequent grant of scutageto Queen Eleanor, on 3 May [Cal. CloseRolls, 1237-42, p.422]. (A later order, dated 12 February 1243/4, doesrefer to the lands and the marriage of the heirhaving been granted to thequeen, but this is presumably an error [Cal. CloseRolls, 1242-47, p.158].)

The manor of Newton Tony descended to Roger'sson Ralph (d.1295) and thento his son Robert [Victoria County History, Wiltshire, vol.15, p.146].East Coulston passed to Walter de Beauchamp, who married Roger's daughterAlice, and later to their descendants [Victoria County History, Wiltshire, vol.8, p.235].

[6894] It has been suggested that the family derived its name from Sai, about two miles SE of Argentin in Normandy, though there is no substantialevidence for this. Certainly William de Say, possibly a Norman, marriedby 1098 Agnes, daughter of Hugh de Grentmesnil.

But the known pedigree originates with another William de Say, grantedhis(probably dead) father's lands in a charter of the Empress Maud betweenChristmas 1141 and June 1142; joined his brother-in-law Geoffrey deMandeville, 1st Earl of Essex of the 1140 creation, in rebellion againstStephen 1144; married Beatrice (died 19 April 1197 or some year beforeit), daughter of William deMandeville, sister of 1st Earl of Essex anddivorced wife of Hugh Talebot, andwas allegedly killed in an attack onBurwell Castle, Cambs, along with his brother-in-law, 1st Earl of EssexAug 1144, though he may well have died later. [Burke's Peerage]

Note: Magna Charta Sureties has Geoffrey de Mandeville dead 14 Sep 1144.Also note that I have this William as a grandson of William de Say& Agnesde Grentmesnil.

William de Say I is chiefly known as an associate of Geoffrey deMandeville, 1stEarl of Essex, in his last revolt, with Hugh Bigod, against Stephen in 1144. In the 2nd charter of the Empress Maud to theEarl, issued between Christmas 1141 and the end of June 1142, William wasgiven a special grant of his father's lands. According to Henry ofHuntingdon, he waskilled with the Earl in Aug. 1144 when, after occupyingRamsey Abbey, they were attacking Stephen's fort at Burwell, Cambs. butthere is evidence that William surv. the Earl (f). He m. Beatrice, divorced wife of Hugh Talebot, sister of Earl Geoffrey above named, andda. of William de Mandeville. The Earl is said to have brought her toEngland forthe marriage. She lived to a great age; d. 19 Apr, in orbefore 1197, and was buried at Walden Abbey. (Complete Peerage XI:464-5(transcribed by Thomas Aiken))

(f) The Earl himself did no die until Sep. Dr. G Herbert Fowler, in apaper on the Beauchamps, Barons of Eaton, cited a confirmation to St.Neot's Priory by William de Say and Beatrice his wife and William hisheir for the soul of Earl Geoffrey de Mandeville of a grant of land inEaton Socon, Beds. The original grant was made for the soul of the sameEarlby Hugh de Beauchamp, who, Dr. Fowler says, was William's man inrespect of the land. Eaton Socon had been restored to the Earl in 1142 bythe Empress Maud, and such interest as William possessed must have beenin right of his wife. The"Libellus de Anniversariis of Ramsey Abbey" saysthat William de Say d. 11 Janwithout giving the year. This refers toWilliam de Say I because William II d.about Aug in 1177.
