Sources: RC 335; Kraentzler 1163, 1214, 1342, 1350; Norr p23a; Pfafman; Ayers,p641. Norr cites two sources for Joseceline "of Denmark" being the daughter of Senfrie. Genealogist Magazine also says Senfrie was her mother. ButBristol and Gloucester Archaeological Society transactions say her mother wasWeva (Wevie) and RC agrees. Dot Clark's sources cited below indicate Joselinewas thedaughter of Senfrie. Wevie, Senfrie and Gonnora were sisters. K-1342 and 1350: Josceline de Ponte-Audemer. Ayers: Josceline, niece of Gunnor de Crepon, wife of Richard I ofNormandy.
SOURCES:
1. Montgomery, Bo Gabriel de, _Originand History of the Montgomerys_,1948, p. 44: There has been much confusion about whether Joseline was marriedto the elder Roger or his son Hugo, and which of the sisters of the DuchessGunnor she was the daughter of. In the thirdCharter of Troarn, Roger II in his ownwords calls himself "Ego Rogerius, ex Normannis Normannus, magni autem Rogerii filius" (_Cartulary of Troarn_, fol. 1). In a letter to Henry I, Ives,Bishop of Chartres says "Gonnora et Senfriasorores fuerunt...ex Senfria excivit Joscelina, ex Joscelina, Rogerius de Monte Gummeri, ex Rogerio, Mabiliasoror Roberti Bellimensis" (Migne, _Patrologialatina, CLXII, 261). Thus,Josceline was the daughter of Senfrie, not Wevia as stated by William of Jumieges, and was the mother of Roger II.
p. 44-5: By Josceline, Roger I had five sons: Hugo, Robert, William,Roger II, and Gilbert. William was killed during the succession war after thedeath of RobertII, Duke of Normandy. It is probably that Hugo and Robert met thesame fate;they seen to have been dead in 1050 when Roger II inherited thefeudal domains. Gilbert was poisoned in 1063 by Mabile de Belleme (MabelTalvas, wife ofRoger II), according to Ordericus Vitalis, II, 81, 106-7.
According to the Cartulary of Troarn, Josceline was still living in 1068. **** Norr also says,p23a, that Josceline, born about 970, daughter of Senfrie, married Roger Montgomery.
