The name Phippen is a patronymic, being originally Fitzpenn or Fitzpayn.
In the twelfth century, the baronial family of Fitzpayn held the manor of
Oaksey, Wilts, and held lands in Dorsetshire. When Rev. George Fitzpen,
brother of David Phippen of New England,entered his pedigree and arms in
the visitation of Cornwall, 1620, the pedigree was headed "Fitzpen al's
Phippen", and the same form was usedi n his willin 1650. As late as
1677, David's son appears in New England records with many variations of
spelling, including Phippeny.
