John Mendenhall was born at Marridge Hill, the family estate in Wiltsire,
England. He came to America in 1682 with William Penn and his brothers,
Benjamin and Moses, and sister Mary. He was an active and influential member
of the Society of Friends (Quakers). In 1697 he granted the grounds occupied
by the Concord Friends Meeting House and graveyard and he was one of the
original shareholders in the first Concord Mills. John was married twice but
there were no children of the second marriage.
