[22169] This John Holcomb(e) was a descendant of Walter de Holcombe, who was Lord of Holcombe in County Devon by A.D. 1301. Walter Holcombe was the great-great grandson of Sir John de Holcombe of Dorchester, England, whowas knighted and granted the Manor of Holcombe for heroic action in battle in Palestine in the Third Crusade. The Third Crusade (1189-1192) was led by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, Richard the Lion hearted of England, and Philip Augustus of France. Frederick died before reaching the Holy Land and Richard and Philip were more concerned with their own deadly rivalry in Europe than with the war against the infidel. Acre is captured (1191) but Jerusalem stands firm, although Saladin, in a treaty negotiated with Richard, grants the Christians access to the city.

James Butler, Earl of Ormund, b. c 1305, d. Jan or Feb 1337/8, son ofEdmund Butler, d. London, 13 Sep 1321, son of Theobald le Boteler andJoan Fitz John, daughter of Sir John Fitz Geoffrey and Isabel Bigod.[Magna Charta Sureties]
---------------------------------------------
Edmund was succeeded as 7th Butler by his teenage son, James, a liberal, pleasant and stately youth. As soon as James was 21 he was knighted. Ayear later he married the king's niece, Eleanor de Bohun, and, in thefollowing year, October, 1328, he was created Earl of Ormond. As in thecase of his father's "earldom" of Carrick, the creation charter ismissing; but the earldom of Ormond was probably limited to theheirs-male, despite, the weighty opinion to the contrary of J. H. Round. The question didnot arise until the death of the 7th Earl in 1515; but itmay well arise againwhen the Ormonde Marquessate becomes extinct. [Note:the last Marquess of Ormonddied in Chicago in 2001.]
A few weeks after he was created Earl of Ormond, James was granted, by Edward III, the regalities and liberties of Co. Tipperary. Later the king saw fit to seize all the Counties Palatine in Ireland, of such importance had they become. But the Palatine of Tipperary was restored to Ormond on account of his royal consanguinity by marriage. This was the period of the over mighty subject that led to the Wars of the Roses. Ormond himself had extensive and widely distributed properites. Yet he lived and fought chiefly in Ireland where, in the flower of his youth, he died in his manor, a stone tower covered with shingles, at Moyalvi, Co. Tipperary. [Butler Family History]
