[24197] He was Third Lord of Poix, SecondLord of Laingaham Kingsworthy and Avon.A Baron of France and England,Castellon of Pontoise, 1091. Joined the 1stCrusade and was at the siege of Jerusalem, 1096. Founded the Priory ofSt. Denis, 1116 and the monastery of Selincourt 1131. Made a pilgrimagetothe Holy Land in 1136and there died. Is reported to have slain KingRufus (TheRed) in 1100.Some historians state that King Rufus may havetaken the "king's prerogative" with Sir Walter's wife while Walter was ona lengthy crusade. At any rate, the two of them were hunting in theforest alone and Sir Walter's arrow found its way into King Rufus. Theking was so unpopular among his subjects that it is reported that hisbody lay in the woods for quite some time before anyone would go afterit. Sir Walter probably had to beat a retreat back to France (Normandy),but apparently later he turned to England. He was without a doubt a bravewarrior and a staunch Christian, and it would be hard to believe that hewould murder the king, disgusted as he may have been about the king'sun-Christian behavior. But, who knows.
