In 1086 Aubrey de Ver, the ancestor of the Earls of Oxford, in addtion tohis tenancies-in-chief in several counties, was an under-tenant ofGeoffrey bishop of Coutances in Kensington, Middlesex, and two places inNorthamptonshire. This indicates that his place of origin was Ver (asindicated), which is 18 kil.South of Coutances and not Ver in the Bessin.[Origins of Some Anglo-Norman Families]
