will written 1614, witnessed by Robert Batt of Wiltshire Richard willed his property on Frog Lane in Amesbury to his son William. Made a trip toAmerica but returned to England a clergyman at Amesbury,Wiltshire,England and a rector at Sherwell in 1616 He was a "dissenting clergyman" who, in 1635, was compelled by the ruling of the "Star Chamber:" against such prechers to flee the country or suffer improsonment. He sought refuge in France, and returned to England in 1640.After his return to England he was vicar of Poling a parish in Sussex, near Brighton, and 1652, reference is made to his preaching against the popery before his vast audiences in the church at Newport Panalls. Amesbury is 2 miles East of Stonehedge Monoliths. He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford, on5-28-1592 and took his degrees BA on 2-19-1596BD on 6-25-1611 DD on2-10-1617 He was elected to a Cornish fellowship at his college on 6-30-1596 and retained it until 6-30-1606 during which time he devoted his attention under the advice of Thomas Holland the rector of ExetorCollege, to the study of theology, and became noted for his preaching powers. In 1606 he was appointed by Sir Robert Chichester to the rectories of Sherwell and Loxhore, near Barnstaple, and it is suggested that he was the Richard Carpenter who from 1601-1626 held the vicarage of Collumpton. While he was a tutor at Oxford, Christopher Tervelyan, a son of John Tervelyan of Nettlecombe, Somersetshire, who married Urith, a dau of Sir John Chichester of Devonshire, was among his pupils. and through this introduction to these families Carpenter married Susanna, his pupils youngest sister. and obtained his benefice from Sir Robert Chichester. He died 12-18-1627 and was buried in the chancel of Loxhore Church. There is a monument erected there to his memory. Because Richard Carpenter was a Catholic Priest, his coat of arms of 3 crosslets, derived from John Carpenter the younger of London would pass down to his descendants with avertical green bend sinister. Even though the priests were required to be celibates, it was not unusual in those times for church officials of all ranks to have families named in their wills although no wife could benamed in a will. His coat of arms was probably granted when he was at Coleford, Newland Parish in Glouchester County.
