Ezra Perry is first found in Sandwich, MA 7 August 1644 when he pledged 9 shillings toward repair of the local meeting house. Nothing else is found in the records until his marriage to Elizabeth "Burge" 12 Feb. 1651/52, the daughter of one of more important men of the town. He was a lieutentant of the Sandwich militia and he agreed to assist in the building of a new meeting house on 29 May 1665. He was granted 30 acres of land on 25 June 1665 and he received another small grant of 20 acres 2 July 1667. On 5 June 1671, he and Edward Perry were appointed to represent Sandwich on a committee "to view the damage done to the Indians by the horses and hogges of the English." He served on the grand jury 3 June 1674 and 5 June 1677.
He was appointed Constable 3 June 1679 and was named co-exeutor of his father-in-law's estate, along with wife's brother Joseph Burges.
Ezra's will is dated 16 October 1689 in which he mentions his wife, son Samuel Perry, son Benjamin Perry, son Ezra, son John, daughter Remembrance, daughter Deborah, wife of Seth Pope, and daughter Sarah, wife of Ephraim Swift. He died the same date, in his 64th year, and was buried at the Sandwich Cemetery. In 1929, his gravestone and that of his wife were still legible. The estate inventory was taken 24 October 1689 and totaled 78 pounds, 8 shillings, this property having been distributed prior to his death. The will is reproduced below.
It is speculated that Ezra was, perhaps, stepson of the widow Sarah Perry whose estate he claimed and inventoried 8 June 1659 after having been granted permission by the court the previous day. Other Perry families in the Sandwich area may have been related as well. (See NEHGS "Register," Vol 115, pg. 86-88 & Vol 124, pg. 50).
Barnstable County, Mass., Probate Records, 27, [p. 33] The will of "Ezra Perry Snr of of manument and Towne of Sandwich" made 16 October, 1689, after providing that his body be buried "at ye ordinary place of burring," disposes of his estate as follows:
"All my outward moveables, with out doars and with in docars to my truly and well beloved wife, as my true undoubted and Lawful Executrix .... to dispose of at her pleasure Excepting what I Leave and bequeath to my well beloved Son Samuel Perry that is two stiers of two and one heifer of fout years, one mare Coult one Bed and furniture be Longing thereto one gun one Sword and Bandaleers one Iron pot, to my well beloved Son Benjamin Perry two Cowes two steeres about three years old one bed- and its ffurniture one gun one Sword
To my Daughter Remember too Cows one bed and its ffurniture, one meare and all her Increse,
also to my Son Ezra one Shilling
To John Perry my Son one Shilling to
Deborah my Daughter wife to Seth Pope one Shilling
To Sarah wife to Epharim Swift one Shilling"
The will was signed by a mark. It was witnessed by Jacob Burge (who made his mark) and James Steuart, and probated 18 April, 1690. [p. 34] The inventory, taken 24 October, 1689, by Elisha Bourne and Nathaniel Wing, was sworn to by "Elizabeth Perry ye Relict of ye above sd Ezra Perry" on 18 April, 1690. The will and inventory were recorded 22 April, 1690, by Joseph Lothrop, recorder.

EZRA PERRY OF SANDWICH, MASS (c. 1625-1689) By Lydia B.(Phinney) Brownson and Maclean W. McLean, 1961, NEHGR Vol. 115 Pg 86-90:
For well over a hundred years various descendants of Ezra Perry of Sandwich, Mass., have gathered data regarding him and his descendants. The results of their work have largely disappeared, sometimes through destruction by fire, but more often as a result of the decease of the searcher before his or her manuscript was completed, thus necessitating much duplication of effort. The purpose of this article, then, is to combine and record as briefly and clearly as possible the results of research of its compilers over a period of years. It is hoped that it will stimulate research in England, and that others will be encouraged to contribute corrections and additions.
Circumstantial evidence suggest that this Ezra Perry was closely related to others of the name in Sandwich (Edward, Edmund, Margaret, Hannah) and probably also in Scituate, Mass. Conclusive evidence regarding the precise nature of these relationships is still to be found...
After his first appearance in the record nothing is found until his marriage:"Ezra Perry & Elizabeth Burge were maried the 12th day of ffebruarie, Anno. Dom. 1651" (May. Des., 14:109). Elizabeth (Burges) Perry, born prob. in or near Truro, Cornwall, England, about 1929, was the only dau. of Thomas and Dorothy Burges of Sandwich (See THE REGISTER, 49:240, for her ancestry).
The town records show that "Lieftenant" Perry received 4 shillings pay 4 April 1657for service in the militia. Yet he seems not to have played a prominent rolein the public life of the community. The fact that he married the daughter of one of its chief men, and that his eldest son married a daughter of the powerful Governor Prence*, attests to his standing, however. His multitude of descendants represent an astonishing variety of people, including President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, the first wifeof President Theodore Roosevelt, and several contemporary genealogist as well as the present compilers.
Ezra Perry died 16 Oct. 1659 (the same day tha he made his will). His gravestone shows him to have been in "his 64th yr" (Sandwich Cemetery inscriptions). The inventory of his estate, dated 24 Oct. 1689, was taken by Elisha Bourne and Nathaniel Wing and shows a total persons estate of 78pounds, 8s. and no real estate. "Elizabeth Perry ye relict of above Ezra Perry" took oath to the truth of the inventory 18 April 1690. Thewidow Elizabeth Perry died (apparently intestate since there is no record ofthe settlement of her estate) 26 Sept. 1717 "in her 88th yy." Both her gravestone and that of her husband wre clearly legible in 1929.
FTM CD203, Barnstable County Mass., Probate Records, Pg 26,26: The will of "Ezra Perry Snr of Manument and Town of Sandwich" made 16 October, 1689, after providing that his body be buried "at ye ordinary place of burring," "disposes of his estate as follows: " "All my outward moveables, with out doars and with in doears to my truly well beloved wife,as my true undoubted and Lawful Executrix .... to dispose of at her pleasureExcepting what I Leave and bequeath to my well beloved Son Samuel Perry thatis two stiers of two and one heifer of four years, one mare Coult one Bed and furniture be Longing thereto one gun one Sword and Bandaleers one Iron pot,to my well beloved Son Benjamin Perry two Cowes two steeres about three years old and one bed and its ffurniture one gun one Sword To my Daughter Remember too cows, one bed and its ffurniture, one meare and all her Increse, also to my Son Ezra one Shilling To John Perry my son one Shilling To deborah my Daughter wife to Seth Pope one Shilling to Sarah wife of Epharim Swift one Shilling" The will was signed by a mark.
