C Winifred Straub, 95, went home to be with her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ on September 1, 2017, at her home in Greenville, N.C. She was born in Bartberton, Ohio on June 23, 1922 to Rev. Ralph and Anna Auker Simpson.
They lived in Hillsdale, Pa. for two years where her father pastored two churches. In 1929, the family moved to Seville, Ohio. She graduated from Seville High School in 1941. For several years, she worked in the Sales Dept. of The Ohio Injector Co. in Wadsworth, Ohio as a typist and secretary. She attended Barberton School of Commerce, Cleveland Bible College, Kent State University, and Houghton College. In 1954, after receiving a BA in English Literature, High School, and Elementary Education from Houghton College, Houghton, N.Y, she taught at Isham Elementary School, Wadsworth, Ohio.
She married Roy R. Straub on July 29, 1955, and resided in Wadsworth until he entered Asbury Seminary, Wilmore, Ky., in 1958. Winifred assisted her husband as he pastored in The Wesleyan Church for 32 years; Africa Wesleyan Church near Galena, Ohio; Avon Wesleyan Church, Avon, N.Y.; Grace Lee Memorial Wesleyan Church, Chambers, N.Y.; and First Wesleyan Church, Greenville, N.C. Winifred was a secretary for Roy and the church throughout most of his ministry. She worked with the church music programs, organizing, and directing the choir. For eight years, she was District Director of Wesleyan Women International for the Central New York District of the Wesleyan Church and served various other capacities in the district. In recent years, Winifred and Roy have been worshiping at Oakmont Baptist Church in Greenville, N.C. At a young age, Winifred often sang in trio with her two sisters. As long as her health permitted, she sang with the JOY Singers (Just Older Youth). Their ministry has been mainly to area nursing homes.
She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Hazel Simpson and Fern Messner; and son, John.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Roy R. Straub; daughters, Linda (Bradford) White, Greenville, N.C.; grandchildren, Phillip, Janelle and Jordan, Jane (Gregory) Whitaker, Corning, N.Y.; grandchildren, Kristin, Jonathan and Stephen; brother, Forrest (Zola) Simpson, Wadsworth, Ohio; sister, Ruth Hartley, Akron, Ohio; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. and an hour prior to memorial service. Memorial service Thursday, September 7, 2017, at 2 p.m. Service and visitation will take place at Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home in Wadsworth, Ohio. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Wadsworth, Ohio.
Memorial gifts may be made to Houghton College, 1 Willard Ave., Houghton, NY 14744.
