"The Immigrant: Thomas Burgess of Sandwich, Massachusetts" Thomas, the immigrant, is sometimes thought to have come to Salem, Massachusetts, with his wife, Dorothy, andhis young family in 1630. A stone set by the grave of John Burgess, Jr. (John, Joseph, John, Thomas) in Center Cem., Rochester, reads 'Descendant of Thomas Burgess the pilgrim who landed at Salem 1630' ... A land record dated July3, 1637, shows that he [Thomas] forfeited acreage assigned him at Duxbury, in order to settle the same year at Sandwich. There, he and his family lived at the western end of town, which later became part of the township of Bourne, in the area now called Sagamore. He became a large landowner in Sandwich and serve the town in many capacities.
Thomas, his wife Dorothy, their only daughter, Elizabeth (Burgess) Perry, and her husband, Ezra Perry, are buried quite close together near the brow of the hill in the Old Burying Ground on Grove Street in Sandwich.

Thomas Burgess arrived with his wife in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1630, at the age of 27, and remained for a time in the adjoining community of Lynn, about ten milesnortheast of Boston. (They are believed to have arrived on the ship 'The Blessing of the Bay'.) A section of land was assigned to him, 3 July 1637, in Duxbury, 30 miles south of Boston; but in the same year there appeared on the map, 64 miles south of Boston, the township of Sandwich, in the colony of Plymouth, to which he moved the following year, making his permanent abode in that section of the township which has come to be known as Sagamore... He was one of the original eleven male members of the first Congregational Church in Sandwich and was known among his contemporaries as "Goodman Burgess." BURGESS, Thomas (1603-85), from Eng. to Salem, Mass., ca. 1630; settled at Sandwich, 1637;

Burial Notes: His grave was honored by amonumental slab imported from England. "This was the only monument set up for any Pilgrim of the first generation." (Otis) The stones of Thomas and Dorothy were restored by descendants in 1917 and in 1994 were called "marvelously legible." The cemetery is situated almost directly across the mill pond fromthe Thornton W. Burgess (Jr.) Museum.

Ancestry of Thom. Lewis and his wife Elizabeth Marshall of Saco, Maine by
Walter Goodwin Davis, 1947, NEHGR 101, pg 3-23:
Thomas Lewis, the patentee of Saco in the Province of Maine, was a
native of Shrewsbury, co. Salop (now Shropshire), where his father was a
wealthy merchant and his grandfather a prosperous yeoman named Lewis Ap
Jevan, whose sons, abandoning the Welsh system of nomenclature, adopted
their father's Christian name for the English surname.
Thomas was born in Shrewsbury in the 1590 decade. As he was a
benefactor of Shrewsbury School in later life he was undoubtedly a pupil
there, ... As Thomas Lewis, son of Andrew Lewis, draper, he was
apprenticed to a member of the Drapers Company in 1607, but his principal
business, after his apprenticeship ended, was that of vintner, or wine
merchant. His grandfather Herring, who was a vintner, left no sons, but
two of his grandsons, Thomas Lewis and Thomas Woley, who was also a
vintner, probably inherited his business. In 1618/9 he was the owner or
lessee of the Sextry, a tavern and in the Sextry Shut, managed by his
partner George Cleeve... The Sextry, now known as the Golden Cross,is
till one of the taverns of Shrewsbury.
Thomas Lewis and Elizabeth Marshall were married at St. Chad's on Aug.
29, 1618. By this marriage he must have added to the not inconsiderable
means which had come to him as his father's only son when Andrew Lewis
died in 1617.
When and how Lewis became interested in emigration to New England is,
of course unknown.
June 28, 1631, fouind Mr. Lewis arrived frmo England and entering into
possession of his property, livery of scisin being given to Mr. Edward
Hilton of New Hampshire...
Mr. Lewis died between 1637 and 1640, probably before 1639...
Mr. Lewis' widow, elizabeth Lewis, survived him only a short time.
Capt. Richard Bonython, by William B. Trask, NEHGR, 1885, Vol. 39 pg 345:
THOMAS LEWIS--With Bonython, Vinesand Oldham, this person was one of
the original patentees of the present cities of Saco and Biddeford,
whither he had emigrated prior to 1630. He had acted as attorney of the
Council of Plymouth for giving possession in 1629 of the Hilton Patent at
Piscataqua. [Belknap, New Hampshire, i. 20]. He was taxed 3 pounds in
1636 for support of the minister at Saco, and was probably an official in
the provincial government of Maine previous to the government of William
Gorges, 1636, as at the first court of the latter a complaint was entered
against Lewis, and he was ordered to "show cause whjy he will not deliver
up the combination" to the new government, meaning the instrument of
mutual agreement for self-government. a the same court he served as
councillor, but was sued for trespass by John Richmond, and in another
cause was ordered to pay to Thomas Wise "one fathom of this cuntry(s)
beads." (York Court Records). He died between 1637 and 1640, as at the
latter date, when the new administration of Thomas Gorges assumed control
of affairs, his estate was directed to pay Francis Robinson, executor of
his will, certain expenses incurred onaccount of two of the heirs. His
children were:
i. Judith, married JamesGibbins about 1647.
ii. Mary, married about 1637, Rev. Richard Gibson
iii.____, married Robert Haywood of Barbadoes.

short distance above the lower ferry on Saco river. He was evidently a
man of superior ability and of high standing in the colony. He was
