! Birth: s/o John LUMMYS/Agnes LYNGWOOD. 24 Aug 1590, Braintree, Essex,England.
Marriage to Mary WHITE:30 Jun 1614, Shalford, Essex, England.
Death: 25 Nov 1658, Windsor, CT. 1658.
(3a) Was a woolen draper, a merchant engaged in the purchase of cloth from the many weavers who wove on hand-looms in their cottage homes. Hehad a store in Braintree stocked therewith and with other goods which adraper dealt in. These products he sold at large, both wholesale and retail, to tailors and consumers in general. Braintree and nearby towns were centers of cloth manufacture.
(3a) 1638, 11 Apr: Joseph HILLS of Charlestowne in New England, Woollen Draper, aged about 36 years, deposed on 30 Jul 1639 that he came to New England undertaker in the ship called Susan & Ellen of London whereof wasmaster Mr. Edward PAYNE, in the year of our Lord 1638, and he knows that divers goods and chattells, victualls & commodities of Joseph LOOMIS lateof Brayntree in the County of Essex, Woolen-draper, which were put in three butts, two hogsheds, one halfe hog shed, one barrel, one tubb &three firkins, transported from Malden in the County of Essex to Londonin an Ipswch Hye, were shipped in the said ship 11 Apr 1638, and thisdeponent cleared the said goods with divers other goods of the said Joseph LOOMIS and other mens, in the Custome-house at London, and thatthe said goods were transported into New England in the said ship where she arrived 17 Jul 1638. (4) The family tradition that he came in the"Mary and John" is wrong. It is more likely, though no evidence is found, that he accompanied Rev. Ephraim HUET in 1638 and brought sons Joseph, John, Thomas, Samuel and Nathaniel, beside daughters Mary, wife of John SKINNER, Elizabeth, and one who m. Nicholas OLMSTEAD.
(3a) 1640, 2 Feb: He bought a piece of land at Windsor, CT. (4) Of Windsor, CT. Was not first at Dorchester perhaps.
(4) 1652, Aug: Wrote his will.
(2) Inventory of the estate of Joseph LOOMIS of Windsor, CT valued at178.10.00. Taken by Henry CLARKE, John MOORE.
(2,3a) 1658, 2 Dec: An agreement for a division of the estate by the children of Joseph LOOMIS, decd., and approved by the Court of Magistrates at Hartford to bean equal division. The agreement was signed by the children in the following order: Joseph LOOMIS, Nicholas OLMSTED,Josiah HULL, John LOOMIS, Thomas LOOMIS, Nathaniel LOOMIS, Mary TUDOR, Samuel LOOMIS.
Also spelled Lomas
That pioneer Joseph Loomis was a man of "respectable pecuniary means" is also evidenced by the fact that his name appears on the tax list of Braintree, England, for building a ship of 800 tons
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beverly Schonewolf provided the following information about Joseph's origin and immigration. We are trying to find the original source.
The proof that Joseph Loomis came from Braintree, England isestablished by the deposition of Joseph Hills of Charlestown, Mass., taken July 30, 1639.

Beverly Schonewolf also provided the following information about Joseph's will and probate.

His estate was inventoried at 178 pounds 10s. 00d, taken by Henry Clarke, John Moore.
