From Terri (mccon@n-connect.net)
Hillary and his son Benedict (Benny) fought on both the North and the South. Hillary was not living with his wife and had moved to Mo. Benny
was with his dad. But went to visit his mother in KY and some how they both ended up on the South. Hillary married 2 more times and was not
divorced from Cynthia. Being Catholic and all.
I am finding more and more on this Hilary Thompson. It seems he was quitthe trickster!! He was married to Cynthia but never divorced but marriedagain but used his name as Hilbrand M. Thompson. I requested themarriage of Hilary and Julia Ann Gravett in 1869 and was given backinformation that said they could not make an exact connection. Unknownto them the information they did send is the one and same Hilary andHilbrand M. Thompson! Because I am finding this same thing happeningwith civil war records. He signed up for the North 3, years after movingto Iowa, and was separated from Cynathia. It seems he fought for theSouth along with his two oldest sons. He was wounded and sent back Northafter signing a parole for suspicion of being a deserter!!! he thensigned up for the North again. What a KICK!! anyways I have run intothis same thing with not being able to find records for the South.
My grandmother was a granddaughter to Benny Joseph Thompson. Everyone teased Benny about being the Ben Thompson the gunslinger, because he
always had money and no one knew how he got it. He would leave homebroke and come home with a new suit on. He also met anyone who came tothe farm with a revolver. Benedict Joseph (Benny) Thompson married AdelineFrances Grindstaff and they had 10 children from one I am a decendent. Ifyou have any answers or help for me on the one Hilery Morland Thompsonplease let me know or maybe you have an idea where to go to next.Benedicts brother Louis Fielding was the first to come to Ia. ThenBenedicts son Henry Melvin (known as Mel) Thompson moved to southern IA.and this is where my mother is from.
