== Biography ==
James was born in 1840 and baptised at Lordship, County Louth, Ireland, on 18 December 1840. Lordship which adjoins Cooley parish, where his parents married the previous year.

After marrying Catherine Roche in 1866 and living in Rochester, New York for several years, James moved to Olyphant, situated on the outskirts of Scranton, Pennsylvania. His wifeXs brother, Peter, also livedthere, which would prove fortunate for the coupleXs youngest son, Ambrose, born in 1884 and orphaned in 1895.
