Robert appeared in Springfield, MA in 1638/9. He was a farmer, and was licensed to keep the ordinary in 1646, and continued to do so for several years. Keeping the ordinary or inn in those days was a highly respectable position and was only filled by those who were considered responsible persons. In 1659 he was chosen town constable. In 1664 he was fined for not doing his assigned task of fence viewing, but he argued that he had not received any notice of this duty, and the fine was abated. Robert and Mary Ashley were 5th great grandparents of President Rutherford B. Hayes and 6th great grandparents of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
