Humphrey, a very distinguished person amongst the rebellious barons inthe reign of Henry III. Inthe 47th of that monarch [1263] he wasexcommunicated, with Simon de Montfort,Earl of Leicester, and others, forplundering divers churches and committing sacrilege. He was afterwardsone of thecommanders of the battle at Lewes, wherethe king was madeprisoner, and was constituted governor of Goodrich and WinchesterCastles. In the year following, he commanded the infantry at the battleof Evesham where he fell into the hands of the royalists and was sentprisoner to Beeston Castle in Cheshire, where he soon afterwards died,leaving issue, by his wife Eleanor, dau. and co-heir of William de Braoseof Brecknock, and co-heir of her mother Eve, one of the five daus. andco-heirs of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke.
