A History of the Parish Church of St. Mary, Truro

...for in 1628 he constructed a vault under the altar of St. Mary's
Church, covered it with a stone and affixed thereto a monumental
brass--this last beingnow on the ewat wall of St. Mary's aisle. It is
in the shape of a shield with an inscription and the costs of arms of
Phippen, Jordan (his mother's family) and Pye (his first wife's family).
The Latin inscription may be renderedas follows:
"I, George Fitzpen or Phippen (born in) 1591 at Melcomb in Dorset, in
1614 Master of Arts and Preacher, in 1624 Rector of this Church, and Jane
Pye, my wife (married in) 1621, have had this Table and the Vault under
the same made in 1628, Jesu, Son of David, (thou art) alone for us the
Way, the Truth, and the Life."
Master of the grammar school in Truro, Cornwall, in 1620, when he
registered his pedigree and arms which were: Argent, two bars inchief,
three escallops, sable. He became rector of St. Mary's Church, Truro,
but after 26 years was evicted because of Puritanism, and late was
minister in Lamorran. He died without issue, leaving a will dated 10 jul
1650, which was proved mar 1651. In it he mentioned "my brother David
Phippen in New England", giving land to the eldest, second, and third
sons of David, and if one of them should die without issue, his share to
go to David's fourth son, and so on. Although he did not state their
names, he knew David had four sirviving sons at the time.[91502.ftw]
