In 1670, Willia m Johnston was among the leaders of an insurrection at the College in which almost all the fa culty and student body declared themselves Quakers as a way to defeat unbearable political pr essures on the College from Episcopalian and Covenant (Presbyterian) forces then battling fo r religious supremacy in Scotland.
