Obituary of JOSHUA ASHMORE
Another Revolutionary Soldier and servant of Christ has gone to the house appointed for all the living.
Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive: and let thy widows trust in me. Jeremiah 49th 11. Joshua Ashmore died in Pope County, Arkansas, on the 8th of July 1846, being in the 86th year of his age. The deceased, according to the best information obtained, was born in North Carolina, 1761. In his sixteenth year, he was enlisted in the cause of his country; to fight for that liberty which in a short time was achieved. He lived long to enjoy the liberties of a free and republican government, which his youthful mind was vigorous and zealous to obtain, brooking the difficulties and perils to which a man is subject, in such a campaign. His name will be enrolled on catalogue of the last of the heroes of 76 who fought and bled in libertys cause and purchased for us the right and privilege of worshipping God under our own vine and figtree. Oh, with what veneration and respect, should we look up on the names of the fathers of our country. Father A. was a subject and servant of the kingdom of Christ. In his 27th or 8th year, he embraced religion, and attached himself to the Presbyterian Church, in Green County, Tenn. He emigrated from there to Kentucky, where he enjoyed the ministerial labors of the pious J. McGready; he then returned to Middle Tennessee where he enjoyed the great blessing of the revival of 1800. Here he began to reap the fruit of his doing, as a pious father, living in the discharge of all Christian duties, - He had the glorious privilege of seeing all his children hopefully converted to the religion of Jesus Christ a circumstance which is seldom seen in all the bounds of Christendom. Why do not parents pray with and for their children! By his advice, all of his children became members of Cumberland P. Church, save one Father As house was a house of rejoicing, a house of prayer, a house and home for the circuit preacher; and his hand was always ready to contribute something to sustain the Gospel Minister. Often was he seen to engage with his children, at the house of God, in praising the Lord for redeeming grace and dying love. Father A. emigrated in 1849 to the State of Arkansas, and settled in a very destitute portion of it, as it regards ministerial labors; but his heart being fixed upon Christ, he would meet with his pious friends and neighbors, in a prayer meeting capacity, where his language was Oh Lord revive they work! Our father, call and send forth more faithful laborers into thy vineyard. For several years past, he was almost deprived of the organ of hearing, so much so, that he could scarcely converse with any person, except those with whom he was intimately acquainted. Consequently he lived retired, and resorted to the reading of the Holy Scriptures and such religious books as would feast his mind, out of the rich treasures of divine wisdom. The last six months of his life, he was almost entirely confined to his bed. Here he showed that Christian fortitude which none but a Christian could show, while his body and hands suffered with intense pain. It seemed that, while his body was fast sinking, his soul was growing to the full stature of a man in Christ Jesus; his noble theme was religion, And frequently, while conversing with friends upon the subject of death and his departure, he expressed the greatest anxiety to depart and be with Christ. In fact he prayed for this; and it seemed that he had an earnest of his acceptance with the blessed Saviour and reward in Heaven.
I could renounce my all below,
If my creator bid,
And run if I were called to go,
And die as Moses did,
Clasped in my heavenly Fathers arms,
I would forget my breath,
And lose my life among the charms,
Of so divine a death.
He bade farewell to his weeping friends, on the 8th of July last, and took his exit for a world of spirits where he had paid up treasure, where moth and rust could never corrupt. He has left his children to follow his footsteps in training up their off-spring in the nurture and admiration of the Lord; while he has gone to join the happy throng around the resplendent throne of God to sing redemption and life forever more.
We sorrow not as those who have no hope; but we look forward with sweet anticipation of clasping anew the immortal hand of father A. and many of his friends. May the Lord grant it. Amen.

Dear niece I take the pleasure to write you a few lines to let you no that I am well at present I received your card the other day that you wrote to Dink Ford You said that you wanted to no which one of your Pas sisters that was alive the first time I married I married a Burris and I had 8 children by him he died and I lived a widow 18 years My children all married and they are all ded but two and is Saby Ann(?) Keeton and elivra Lemley the last time I married I married a Lemley and he is now 88 years old and I am 78 years old the 16 day of last June and am stout for a woman of my age can do my washing and house work we have no one in family but us two.

Ashmore they are both ded and 3 children are al married but one of Robert D. and she is the youngest one and they are a al living in Pope County but one there may be another one of your Pas sisters a living she did live in Kansas her name Atheylinday you said that you wanted my picture. I have not got nare one taken now I want you to send me yours if you have got your Pas picture I want to have one drawn from it and send it to me I want you to write to me where your Pas first set of children are living and how many he had by his first wife and what their names are and how many he had by his last wife and their names and where they live tell them al to write to me I will close by saying write soon and often.
