Robert was the forebear of the Earls of Lincoln. Robert was banished from England by Henry I (Beauclerc) for supporting Robert Curthose, for thishe was in exile for a few years. He was pardoned and returned to Englandwhere he assisted in therefoundation of a Cluniac Priory toSt. Oswald atNostell, south of Barnsley (Nostell = 'North Stall'). He also establisheda Cluniac Order at Pontefract. Robert de Laci's eldest son Ilbert strongly supported King Stephen against Matilda's claims. He fought withconspicuous valour at the Battle of the Standard at Northallerton in 1138where the Scottish were routed. He died without issue. LORD OF PONTEFRACT CASTLE
Robert sided with Robert Curthose after William II's death and was expelled from the realm by Henry I. Henry gave away Pontefract which was returned to Robert's son Ilbert during the reign of King Stephen.
The town of PONTEFRACT, WEST YORKSHIRE, is a small market town 13 milesf rom Leeds. Pontfract is a French name for the English word Brokenbridge. Also called "Pomfret." Pontrefact is famous today for soft licorice buttons called "Pomfret Cakes."
