will written 1614, witnessed by Robert Batt of Wiltshire Richard willed his property on Frog Lane in Amesbury to his son William. Made a trip toAmerica but returned to England a clergyman at Amesbury,Wiltshire,England and a rector at Sherwell in 1616 He was a "dissenting clergyman" who, in 1635, was compelled by the ruling of the "Star Chamber:" against such prechers to flee the country or suffer improsonment. He sought refuge in France, and returned to England in 1640.After his return to England he was vicar of Poling a parish in Sussex, near Brighton, and 1652, reference is made to his preaching against the popery before his vast audiences in the church at Newport Panalls. Amesbury is 2 miles East of Stonehedge Monoliths. He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford, on5-28-1592 and took his degrees BA on 2-19-1596BD on 6-25-1611 DD on2-10-1617 He was elected to a Cornish fellowship at his college on 6-30-1596 and retained it until 6-30-1606 during which time he devoted his attention under the advice of Thomas Holland the rector of ExetorCollege, to the study of theology, and became noted for his preaching powers. In 1606 he was appointed by Sir Robert Chichester to the rectories of Sherwell and Loxhore, near Barnstaple, and it is suggested that he was the Richard Carpenter who from 1601-1626 held the vicarage of Collumpton. While he was a tutor at Oxford, Christopher Tervelyan, a son of John Tervelyan of Nettlecombe, Somersetshire, who married Urith, a dau of Sir John Chichester of Devonshire, was among his pupils. and through this introduction to these families Carpenter married Susanna, his pupils youngest sister. and obtained his benefice from Sir Robert Chichester. He died 12-18-1627 and was buried in the chancel of Loxhore Church. There is a monument erected there to his memory. Because Richard Carpenter was a Catholic Priest, his coat of arms of 3 crosslets, derived from John Carpenter the younger of London would pass down to his descendants with avertical green bend sinister. Even though the priests were required to be celibates, it was not unusual in those times for church officials of all ranks to have families named in their wills although no wife could benamed in a will. His coat of arms was probably granted when he was at Coleford, Newland Parish in Glouchester County.

Their ship left Dartmouth, Devonshire, england on Fri May 1, 1636 and arrived in New England on 6-24-1636 at Hingham, Ma the ship was called the "Plain Jane" and arrived at Boston after a 54 day trip. William is listed in the first deed executed in the colony by Roger Williams. Robert Coles lived on the property adjoining. William Carpenter, Robert Coles, and William Arnold were 3 of 14 charter members of the Baptist Church of America established by Roger Williams at Providence on 8-3-1638 For defense against indian attacks, William carpenter built a block house on his property soon after settling there. In an Indian attack during King Philips War, all the settlers gathered for protection inside the block house, where their brave stand compelled the Indians to retreat. This William's son William Jr. was killed in the attack, though, and this William, while busily engaged in repairing the damage to his estate died on 9-7-1685.

William [III of Toulouse] married Arsinde, then Emma of Provence. Emma was daughter of Roubaud (Rodbold) II, brother of Count William II of Provence (and also Count - Provence was, several times, subdivided among brothers. A later such division produced what would become the independent County of Forcalquier, but I don't know if there was a formal partition between Rodbold II and William II, with Rodbold receiving the Forcalquier portion or if they held the undivided County of Provence jointly). Arsinde's placement as being from Anjou probably results from confusion with Adelaide. Stasser proposes that she was instead daughter of William II of Provence (and hence first cousin of Emma) by his first wife, Arsinde of Carcasonne. This would make her a distant relative, being daughter of Arnaud of C. and Arsinde, daughter of Ermengaud of Rouergue, uncle of Raymond Pons. By Arsinde, William III had Raymond and Henry, who both died young, while by Emma he had Pons, Bertrand, and several daughters. FWIW, he makes Odile "of Nice" who is being discussed in the Orange thread, as another daughter of William II of Provence and Arsinde.

DavID Sawyer, son of James I Sawyer and Mary Garrison, was born in N. Carolina
about 1774, and was one of three children born of this marriage. His father,
James, died in 1788, when DavID was l4 years of age, and his mother, Mary, had
died before l784. James I Sawyer remarried to Hannah Haynes, and there was
one son, James, born of this marriage on 18 Aug 1784. This James would be
DavID's half-brother.
Children of the first Marriage of James I Sawyer & Mary Garrison:
DavID Sawyer b. abt l774
Benjamin Sawyer b. 28 June 1776
Mary Sawyer b. abt 1778
Children of the second Marriage of James I Sawyer & Hannah Haynes
James Sawyer b. 18 Aug 1784
All the children of James Sawyer were orphaned upon his death in 1788. All
being minors, guardians were appointed by the courts to administer their
financial affairs until they became of age. DavID, Benjamin and their
half-brother, James Jr. all moved from Mecklenburg Co. N.C. to Logan County,
Kentucky in 1797, purchased their indivIDual farms there, married Henderson
sisters, and raised their respective families in Logan County, Ky.
DavID Sawyer built the rock house in 18l4 on the head waters of the stream
which by that circumstance received the name of ROCK HOUSE FORK OF GASPER
RIVER. It is still standing today (1992). He is described in "The Story of
Logan County" by Edward Coffman as being a quiet man. He was a useful
citizen,
serving on juries and otherwise. He took a calm stand in the conflict with
the revivalists in the Presbyterian Church. DavID was plain and unassuming in
his manners, and served as magistrate and succeeded to the sherrifalty of Logan
County.
DavID Sawyer married Charity Henderson, daughter of Michael Henderson and
Hannah Barnett, in Logan County on 25 June 1799, and there were six children
born of this marriage.
DavID then subsequently married Mary Williamson in 1818 and there were no
children born of this marriage.
DavID died in 1836, and his will sibmitted to the Probate Court of Logan
County, KY. was declared invalID and not accepted as such.
