Note: From the notes below there appears to be a difference of opinion about when Gwaithfoed lived. Harold died 1066 (of course), which fits with Gwaithfoed's death date of 1057. But Edgar lived from 943 to 975, so if he was contemporary with both, he lived a long and prosperous life, marrying both early and very late in life, which is how I portray him.
--------------------------
All of the following information came from Jane Williams Flank, World Connect db=jwflank, rootsweb.com:
Gwaethfoed, Lord of Cardigan and Gwynfai (d 1057), lived in the time of Harold the Saxon; m. Morfydd, dau. of Ivor (or Ynyr), King of Gwent, and one of his heirs. [Annals and Antiquities of Wales II:208]
______________________
Gwaethvoed was contemporary with Edgar, king of Saxons, and was, in conformity with the vassalage of those periods, summoned, with other Welsh chieftains, by Edgar, to meet him at Chester, to row him, in his royal barge, on the river Dee, in proof of his fealty. Gwaethvoed, in answer to his summons, said he could not row, and that he would not, if he could, except it were to save a person's life, whether king or vassal. Edgar sent a second and very imperious message, which Gwaethvoed did not seem at all to notice, until the messenger begged to know what reply he should deliver to the king; when Gwaethevoed, in the Welsh language, answered thus: 'Say to him, fear him who fears not death.: This stern reply, discovering at once to Edgar the fearless unbending character he had to deal with, he prudently changed his autocratic decree into a desire of mutual friendship, and going to Gwaethvoed, gave the chief his hand in pledge of his sincerity. Gwaethvoed married Morfydd, one of the daughters and co-heirs of Ivor, king or lord of Gwent. [Burke's Commoners III:387]

JOHN DE VERDUN, 2nd son of Theobald BUTLER, or LE BOTILLER (who died 19July 1230, in Poitou), being 1st son by his 2nd wife, Rohese,[a] daughterand heir of Nicholas DE VERDUN, of Alton, Staffs, &c., was born about1226. In May--June 1244 he was to be given his wife's share of the landsof her grandfather, Walter de Lacy, Lord of Meath; and on 3 May 1247 hewas to have seizin of his mother's lands. He was granted protection, May1248, to go to Ireland, which he visited many times during his life; wasgiven quittance of common summons in many counties, during 1254-72, andwas appointed one of the Justices in eyre for cos. Salop, Stafford,Warwick, Leicester and Lincoln, December 1259. He had further protectionsto go to Gascony, May 1253, and for service in Wales, August 1257, wherehe was Constable of the army which mustered at Chester; was ordered todefend the Marches against the Welsh in January 1259/60; and was summonedto London to aid the King, April 1260, and to Windsor, for the samereason, October 1263. Later in that year he was among the Royalists whopromised to observe the award of Louis of France touching the Provisionsof Oxford. During the conflict between Simon de Montfort and the CrownJohn followed the King. In August 1265, after the Royal victory atEvesham, he was Keeper of Odiharn Castle, Hants; in October following hewrote, with others, to report to the King the surrender of London; and inFebruary 1265/6 he was appointed to protect Worcestershire from theattacks of the rebels in Kenilworth Castle. In August 1270 he accompaniedthe Lord Edward on his Crusade; and witnessed a charter granted by him inSicily, 15 January 1270/1. He established the Franciscan priory atDundalk, co. Louth.
He married, 1stly, before 14 May 1244, Margery, 1st daughter of GilbertDE LACY, of Ewyas Lacy, co. Hereford, by Isabel, daughter of Hugh (LEBIGOD), EARL OF NORFOLK, which Gilbert (who died v.p. between 12 Augustand 25 December 1230) was son and heir ap. of Walter de Lacy, Lord ofMeath (who died s.p.m.s. shortly before 24 February 1240/1), to whomMargery was coheir. He married, 2ndly, before 1267, Eleanor (f). He issaid to have died 21 October 1274. His widow was living, 10 June 1278.[Complete Peerage XII/2:246-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
[a] Besides Alton her great inheritance in England and Ireland includedBrandon Castle, co. Warwick, Belton, co. Leicester, and Farnham Royal,Bucks, which manor was held by the service of finding a glove for theKing's hand on the day of his Coronation.
(f) Presumably his son Humphrey, b. on the vigil of Pentecost 1267, wasby the 2nd wife. Nothing is known of Eleanor's parentage but she may havebeen a Bohun. A seal, said to be hers, bears the Bohun and Verdun armsand the name of her son, Humphrey, may be significant.
