He [James, 1st Earl of Ormond] was succeeded by his seven-year-old son,James, whom the Irish called "The Chaste", whichwas certainly adistinctive epithet where the Earls of Ormond were concerned. He was alsocalled "The Noble Earl" because he was the grand-grandson of EdwardIandEleanor of Castile. In the Ormonde MSS is an interesting charter of 1341,where Edward III calls him "Dilectus consanguineas et fidelis nosterJacobus Comes d'Ormond et de Carrick", which suggests that even at thatperiod his grandfather had been regarded as hereditary Earl of Carrick.The 2nd Earl of Ormondspent most of his life in Ireland where theconsiderable estates he had inheritedwere augmented by grants for hisgood services. He was several times governor of Ireland, although herefused the post in 1381. Despite a stammer, he successfully proposedmarriage to the daughter of his guardian, Lord Darcy. In 1382, the Earldied at Knocktopher aged 51, and, like his father, was buried in Gowran,not as sometimes stated at Kilkenny. [Butler Family History]
