THE ENCYCLOPEDIA AMERICANA, Volume 26 - SYMMES, John Cleves
SYMMES, John Cleves, American soldier and pioneer; b. Southold, LongIsland, New York, July 21, 1742; d. Cincinnati, Ohio, Feb. 26, 1814. Hewas amply educated and, when the Revolutionary War broke out, he wasteaching school in Sussex County, N.J. He received an appointment as acolonel in the militia and was active in several battles in New Jersey, namely those at Monmouth and Short Hills. As a member of the statecommission he helped draw up the New Jersey state constitution in 1775,and besides serving the New Jersey legislative council, he was elected anassociate justice to the New Jersey Supreme Court (1777, 1783). As amember of the Continental Congress (1785-1786) he became interested inthe western expansion movement and contracted Congress for 2,000,000acres of land in what is now southern Ohio and northern Kentucky.Congress grated him half this amount (1788) and Symmes immediately setout to colonize the tract. He sold many warrants to land but due to hiscarelessness and to slow payments of the warrants, he failed to keep hispayments to Congress. After legislative action, he was finally left withthe 311,682 acres he had previously paid for. He is generally creditedwith being the founder of a colony centered around the presentCincinnati, Ohio.
