HUGH D'AVRANCHES,EARL OF CHESTER The Conqueror and His Companions by J.R. Planché, Somerset Herald. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1874.
Richard Goz, Vicomte d'Avranches, or more properly of the Avranchin, was one of the sons of the aforesaid Turstain, by his wife Judith de Montanolier, and appears not only to have avoided being implicated in the rebellion of his father, but obtained his pardon and restoration to the Vicomté of the Hiemois, to which at his death he succeeded, and to have strengthened his position at court by securing the hand of Emma deConteville, one of the daughters of Herluin and Herleve, and half-sister of his sovereign. By this fortunate marriage he naturally recovered the lands forfeited by his father and bestowed on his mother-in-law,and acquired also much property in the Avranchin, of which he obtained theVicomté, in addition to that of the Hiemois.
There was every reason, therefore, that he should follow his three brothers-in-law in the expedition to England, if not prevented by illness or imperative circumstances. He must have been their senior by some twenty years, but still scarcely past the prime of life, and his son Hugh a stripling under age, as his mother, if even older than her brothers Odo and Robert, could not have been born before 1030, and if married at sixteen, her son in 1066 would not be more than nineteen at the utmost.Mr. Freeman, who places the marriage of Herleve with Herluin after the death of Duke Robert in 1035, would reduce this calculation by at least six years, rendering the presence of her grandson Hugh at Senlac morethan problematical.
---------------------------------------------------
Crispin, M 1969 (pp. 79-80) is no doubt incorrect in showing Emma deConteville as Richard's wife. Moriarty, 1985 (p. 11) says the marriage is probably unfounded.

SIR ROGER DRURY, knight, succeeded Sir Nicholas at ROUGHAM as son and heir, Nicholas, the second son, founded the Hawstead line, and John, the third son, was of Wetherden, co. Suffolk.
Sir Roger Drury of Rougham was knighted in his father's lifetime, before1381; he was party to a fine 1386, and 8 Feb. 1388/9 was witness to aquit-claim to Margaret, Countess of Norfolk, of land in Great and Little Livermere, co. Suffolk and the advowsonof Great Livermere. He was Knight of the Shire for Suffolk, 1391, 1401 and 1407 and was summoned to the Privy Council 21 July 1401. Abstract of deeds follows:
"Ther be sondry dedes of divers dates which prove that this Sir Roger Drury Knight, married Marjory daughter and sole heire of Sir Thomas Naunton Knight etc. This Sir Roger removed his place from Nether place inThurston to Drurys in Rougham wher the seatt is yet Remayninge. In which Churche he with his wife lieenterred wher their portraiturs are to beseene with a faire Tombe and the Armes of Sondry matches in the glasse windows."
Sir Roger was on a commissionofArray 14 July 1402 for the defence of the sea coast against the King's enemies who intend invasion, and again 2 July1405, and on Commissions of array fortheresistance of the King's enemies of France, and others, at present assembled with no small force in theparts of Picardy, who propose to besiege and destroy the King's castlesand towns in those parts and harm the King's lieges and to go to Wales to strengthen the rebels there: Roger Drury
chivaler' Andrew Butiller
chivaler' and two others in Suffolk.
Harleian M.S. 4205, which is anearly 15th century book of mainly Suffolkheraldry depicting jousting with lances and swords by the knights of that period, contains a spirited drawing in colour of "Drwry" in the lists against "Botteler", and it is probable that the antagonists were SirRoger Drury of Rougham and Sir Andrew Boteler of Waldingfield, knights;t he latter married a sister of Sir William Phelip of Dennington, Co.Suffolk, K.G., Lord Bardolf; and died 1429.
There is a brass in Rougham church for Sir Roger Drury and his first wife (died 1405), and a window in Bardwell church has two effigies said to represent them, but in this case the female figure is more likely to be that of Joan, second wife of Sir Roger, possibly a Pakenham.
He married twice, 1. Margaret, daughter and sole heir of Thomas Naunton of Chavent in Rougham, and 2. Joan, whose will was dated 27 Oct. 1446 at Bury St. Edmunds, proved there 9 Nov. 1446. By his first wife he hadissue, 1. Sir William, son and heir, 2. Roger, died without issue, 3.Nicholas, died 1445. 4. Thomas Drury of Candlers in Hessett (whose will dated 21 July 1444 names his children William, John, Thomas, Walter, Alice, Joan, Margery and Agnes), also four daughters, Margaret, second wife of Sir William Clopton, knight, Elizabeth, wife of John Baret of Bury, Margery and Joan.

1450: 3rd baron,in own name after 1st wife's death. 9th son of his parents.
Knight of the Garder
Summoned to parliament as Baron Abergavenny
By marriage, founder of the Abergavenny Neville's
Lands passed to nephew Richard Neville
Buried priory church at Abergavenny
Direct male line has been reported to end with grandson Henry which doesn't seem to be true looking at the children by Elizabeth Beauchamp
Maurice Neville Blakemore, born in 1897 and author of THE BLAKEMORE FAMILY AND ALLIED LINES said on page 222: "I have done considerable research in England and have visited the Castles and Manors whichbelonged to several branches of the Neville family including the housesof Raby, Brancepeth, Warwick, Westmoreland, Latimer and Abergavenny, the latter being the oldest barony in Wales. All these families were related and sometimes one member of the family inherited two or more baronies. Basing my opinion on personal investigations in England, which seem to agree with FAMILY TRADITION, I conclude that the American Neville's are descendants of Ralph Neville of Raby and Westmoreland and probably through his youngest son, Edward Neville, who married Elizabeth, the only daughter of Richard Beauchamp........"
