Thomas Bliss

[13606] [13607]

1550-1560 - 1636

Family 1 :
  1. +Thomas Bliss

INDEX

[13606] The Bliss family seems to be descended from the Norman family of Blois, gradually modified to Bloys, Blyse, Blysse, Blisse, and in Americafinally to Bliss, dated back to the time of the NormanConquest. The nameisnot common in England. The coat-of-arms borne by the Bliss and Bloysfamilies is the same: Sable, a bend vaire, between two fleur-de-lisor.Crest: A hand holding a bundle of arrows. Motto: Semper sursum. Theancient traditions of the Bliss family represent them as living in thesouth of England and belonging to the class known as English yeomanry orfarmers, though at various times some of the family were knights orgentry. They owned the houses and lands they occupied, were free-holdersand entitled to vote for members of parliament. In the early days, ofcourse, they were faithful Roman Catholics, but later after England hadbecome Protestant they became Puritans and became involved in thecontentions between Charles I. and Parliament.
