This man is renowned as one of the great military heroes of
early Massachusetts, and specifically of King Philip's War.
In New England histories he is consistently referred to as
"the brave" Captain Isaac Johnson. He died along with five
other captains at the Narragansett Fort, fighting on
despite hopeless odds.

1634/5. Captain of the Roxbury militia to 1653; General
Court 1671. Lieutenant of the Ancient and Honorable
Artillery Company, 1666; Captain 1667. Killed in the Great
Swamp Fight of King Philip's War, 19 December 1675, while
leading a charge against the main gate of the Indian
village across a bridge made of tree trunks.
