But this is disputed, and with verification:
Hunter Johnston,
"William Johnston, 1st Marquess of Annandale 1st m. Sophia Fairholm and had: Henrietta b. Nov. 11, 1682 James (2nd Marquess) John b. Aug. 3, 1688 - d. c. 1694 William b. Aug. 1696 d. Sep. 24, 1721
"Lord William, fought a duel March 1720 with Capt. Roe of the King's Foot Guard and both were wounded. He died unmarried and is buried next to his mother.
"The story is told in some American Johnston families that he did not really die and his death was 'faked' so as to prevent his arrest for fighting the duel and injuring Capt. Roe who was a favorite of the King. It is put forth that he really escaped to the new world and married and had a large family. I have to wonder, however, that he would reveal his 'true' identity in Virginia which was still under control of the King? I leave it to you to choose the version you prefer. Hunter" (editor: I prefer to believe that our William Johnston was not from this family!)
Came to Virginia in 1722. William was a member of the House of Burgess in Virginia from 1736-1740
-
He was a member of the House of Lords in Scotland. -He fought in a duel withCaptain Roe (Poe) of the Foot Guards and killed him in September 1721. -Cameto America, Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1722. -Was Deputy-Sheriff (1724-26) before becoming Sheriff (1731-1733) of Spotsylvania County, Virginia. -William was a jailor and owned a courthouse until being ousted by his son-in-law, Francis Coleman. (William was fired because he became intoxicated and let somemen escape who had been imprisoned for debt). *-William later built another courthouse where court was held for many years. -He was in House of Burgess 1734 - 1740. -License issued for his tavern at his racetrack in 1737. -Survey in 1727 showed William owning 850 acres. -North Side of Route 606, three miles west of Margo is the "Johnson" family cemetery in Spotsylvania, County. In 1977, Charles Bittaas owned the property and called it "Ram's Lake." -"Panier" was the home named where the "Johnsons" lived in Spotsylvania. -Since there is a little descrepency about when William died, 1769 is the most logical, because that is when Benjamin and Robert Johnston were the executors of William Johnston's will (July 13, 1769). In this last will and testiment William talks of his land in Spotsylvania County. -I knew his death was before Jul 13, 1769, I got the actual date from an internet submitter.
