As the Riceswere one of the earliest,so they have been one of the mostnumerous families in the town - ranking withthe Howes and Brighams, andlike them sending out emigrants to many other towns. If either of thesefamilies had retained all their descendants within the township, thepopulation would have increased more rapidly than it has, though therehad been no other family inthe place.
1. EDMUND RICE, b. about 1594, came from Barkhamstead, Hertfordshire,England, and settled in Sudbury in 1639. He was a prominent man inSudbury; was one oelectmen, or townsmen, as they were frequentlydenominat4ed, and was one of the Deacons of theChurch. He was honoredwith several appointments by the General Court, and wasdenominatedtherein "Goodman Rice." He was appointed to solemnized marriages inMarl., and enjoyed theconfidence of his fellow citizens in both towns. Hewasone of the petitionersfor the grant which was afterwards made the townof Marl., and moved to the place. His wife Tamazine, d. in Sudbury, June13, 1654, andhe m. as a 2d wife, Mercie, wid. of Thomas Brigham, theancestor of the numerous Brighams which afterwards settled at Marl. He m.Mercie, March 1, 1655, and d. at Marl. May 3, 1663, and was buried atSudbury. His wid. m. 1664, William Hunt, of Marl. an earlysettler ofConcord. He do at Marl., 1667, and his wid. d.Dec. 28, 1693. Edmund Ricecame to Marl. soon after the grant of the township,and took uphis abodeonwhat is known as the "great road." on the northerly side of the Pond, notfar from the Williams Tavern. We have no record of the birthof hischildren, and cannot set them down in Chronological order.

Edmund Rice arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1638. Our firstrecord of his presence is in Township Book of the Town of Sudbury in theyear 1639. Regrettably, no ship's passenger list has survived and wehaveno record of Edmund Rice and his family before 1639 so we can not becertain when or where he andhis family arrived in the New World.

His grave is marked by a monument designed by a descendant, ArthurWallace Rice of Boston. It was dedicated by the Rice Association on 29Aug 1914. A boulder with a bronze tablet was also erected by theAssociation and it marks Edmund's homestead, on the Old Connecticut Pathin Wayland.
Edmund married in st. Mary's, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England, on 15Oct 1618, Thomasine Frost, daughter of Edward Frost and ThomasineBelgrave.
He married 2nd, Mercy (Hurd) Brigham, 1 Mar 1655. She was born inEngland about 1618. D. 22 Dec 1693 Marlborough.
