BENJAMIN BRATTON, JR.
The following information is published in FAMILY HISTORY OF
OUR BRATTONS, MASSEYS AND MARTINS, written by Louise B.
Jones:
Statement obtained September 5, 1929 from Benjamin Bratton
Jr. of Searcy County, Arkansas.
'Three brothers came from Scotland to America and separated.
My great grandfather came to North Carolina where he
located. There he reared his family. Grandfather (Paul
Bratton) came to Tennessee before the state was admitted to
the Union. He was put out three times before the state was
admitted to the Union, because the government would not
allow squatters to settle on government territory before
Tennessee was admitted to the Union, and the government was
owner of all the land. That was my grandfather. I do not
know anything about my great grandfather. He, Robert, was
one of the three boys who came from Scotland. (NOTE: We
now know Robert was not the first of the family in America.
We know Robert's parents, John and Rachel were in North
Carolina. They spelled the name Brattain at that time.)
My grandfather, Paul Bratton, never came to Arkansas. My
grandfather married in North Carolina and was disinherited
from the estate because he married out of the Quaker family.
Came to Tennessee, raised his family there, lived and died
there. Do not know how old he was, about 97 or 98 I believe
when he died.
When my father came to Arkansas, there were seven brothers
and sisters that came together with him, all married and had
families. My father Benjamin Sr. only had one child, Jim,
when he came to Arkansas. Jim died at the age of 86 and has
been dead about nine years. Jim was four months old when
they came to Arkansas in about 1834. My father went to
Little Rock in the Mexican War with Capt. Hensley and
enlisted in the Mexican War in 1846. So far as I know, he
did not get to Mexico but came back home.
There were four children at the time. I was just a tiny baby
four weeks old when my father went to the Mexican War. He
was about 22 years old when he married and Jim was four
months old when they came to Arkansas. Father's father was
not dead, he was living in Tennessee, but seven of his
children came to Arkansas at the same time.
My great grandfather was in the War of 1812. He was
captured by the Tories. They called them the "Red Coats."
He was then living in North Carolina. He was the one
brother who came to North Carolina; the other two brothers
went North. We never did know exactly where they did
locate. I do not know when they came from Scotland.
My father lived two years in Marion County and then came to
Wiley's Cove, Searcy County, Arkansas, and settled there and
remained there as long as he lived. There were seven
brothers and sisters who came to Arkansas. Jim died when he
was 86 and 6 months. He was the eldest child. There are
four living now, 1929, France, 86 last month; I am 83, going
on 84; Sister Mary, still living in Oklahoma is about 71 or
72. I saw her when I was down there. Sister Dicey is at
Leslie, Arkansas.
I was 17 when I enlisted in the Federal Army (Civil War).
They have me as 18, but I was not 18. I enrolled on the
25th of August 1864 and was discharged on the 30th of July,
1865. I was in the 3rd Regiment of Arkansas Cavalry.
I do not know anything about the section of Scotland these
brothers came from; all I know is hearing my mother and
father say they came from Scotland. They were Scotch-Irish
descent. My mother was a Williams. My first wife was a
Redman.
I do not know anything about the Quaker origin except they
were of that extraction. My grandfather was disinherited
because he married out of the Quaker family. It was his
father who was in the War of 1812.
My mother was a Williams. Her father was Arden Williams. I
do not know where the original Williams came from. My
grandfather on my mother's side, there were four children.
My grandmother on my mother's side married a fellow named
Rose. My father went back to Tennessee after he came to
Arkansas to see about the estate, they had a pretty good
estate there. Old man Rose got into trouble and he just
left and never went back. Never tried to get anything. The
Civil War came up pretty soon and with the war times and
everything going on, the papers were lost. They claimed
some limitations barred them. He did not enlist in the
Civil War, he was too old. He (Benjamin Sr.) was too old.
He had to stay at Little Rock. After the war went on 2 or 3
years, we could not stay at home because we were in
Confederate territory and had to move out and stay near the
Federal lines. I was there at Little Rock, between
Lewisburg and Little Rock.
Uncles and Aunts who came to Arkansas with my father, some
located at Wiley's Cove, some of Marion County (Flippen,
Barnes, and Big Creek). They all lived in that section of
country. They came from Hardin County, Tennessee. Tom,
Milligen, Ben, Hanna, Rachel, Patsey (Martha), Salley, and
Nancy, their sisters also came.
Hanna married Jesse Sanders; Rachel married Silas Rose;
Patsey (Martha) married Tom Massey; Sally married John Eoff
(pronounced Oaf); Nancy married John C. Tilley.
My mother's grandfather was in the Revolutionary War,
Ambrose Williams. Mother's father (Arden Williams) had a
brother who was in the Indian War.
Uncle John Bratton went to Texas. He had two sons, Jonathan
and Ben. He had three daughters, two of them married
brothers. One daughter Lump Littlefield lived in Gonzales,
Texas. They were great hunters and trappers, true pioneers.

Loan, October 10, 1962 by Guy Bratton, Detroit, Michigan,
grandson of Benjamin Bratton, Jr.)
