DavID Sawyer, son of James I Sawyer and Mary Garrison, was born in N. Carolina
about 1774, and was one of three children born of this marriage. His father,
James, died in 1788, when DavID was l4 years of age, and his mother, Mary, had
died before l784. James I Sawyer remarried to Hannah Haynes, and there was
one son, James, born of this marriage on 18 Aug 1784. This James would be
DavID's half-brother.

All the children of James Sawyer were orphaned upon his death in 1788. All
being minors, guardians were appointed by the courts to administer their
financial affairs until they became of age. DavID, Benjamin and their
half-brother, James Jr. all moved from Mecklenburg Co. N.C. to Logan County,
Kentucky in 1797, purchased their indivIDual farms there, married Henderson
sisters, and raised their respective families in Logan County, Ky.
DavID Sawyer built the rock house in 18l4 on the head waters of the stream
which by that circumstance received the name of ROCK HOUSE FORK OF GASPER
RIVER. It is still standing today (1992). He is described in "The Story of
Logan County" by Edward Coffman as being a quiet man. He was a useful
citizen,
serving on juries and otherwise. He took a calm stand in the conflict with
the revivalists in the Presbyterian Church. DavID was plain and unassuming in
his manners, and served as magistrate and succeeded to the sherrifalty of Logan
County.
DavID Sawyer married Charity Henderson, daughter of Michael Henderson and
Hannah Barnett, in Logan County on 25 June 1799, and there were six children
born of this marriage.
DavID then subsequently married Mary Williamson in 1818 and there were no
children born of this marriage.
DavID died in 1836, and his will sibmitted to the Probate Court of Logan
County, KY. was declared invalID and not accepted as such.
