[20798] James was a Quaker and served as a missionary. Supposedly James Johnston's missionary statu s can be confirmed by documents on file at Quaker House in London. Arthur Johnston's Marisch al College biography (the St. Andrew's Society bio) states the Arthur's "son James was a Quak er missionary". James and three adult sons (reportedly John, Joseph and Robert) and their fam ilies migrated to VA in 1671 shortly after the Scottish Parliament passed the third and mos t severe of the so-called Quaker Acts. Reportedly there are Quaker records which show him spe aking at Quaker Meetings in Isle of Wight and Surry Counties during the 1670's and 1680's.
