George was the oldest son of Arthur Johnston and Mary Kynuncle, and he had the honor of makin g "Bess' List" as a Quaker martyr in Scotland -- meaning that he had served time in prison fo r his religious beliefs. George Johnston/Johnson emigrated to Virginia in 1663/64 and settle d on Muddy Creek in Accomac Co. He was among the founders of the Muddy Creek Quaker Meeting i n 1664 and gave the Meeting 100 acres in 1671 on which to build its first meeting house.
George Johnston was a James River Pilot, and later in life served as a Quacker missionary t o the Pamunkey Indians.
