He is also designated "of Bryn in Winwick and Ashton, co. Lancaster, Bromely, co. Stafford and Hooton, co. Chester." He was slain fighting the Scots at Berwick-on-Tweed. "He brought considerable succors of his tenants and archers, to the assistance of Thomas, earl of Surrey, against the Scots, who in 1513, entered Northumberland, whilst King Henry VIII. was busy in his wars in France. At Flodden Field, both armies engaging, Sir Thomas behaved himself with great valour; and to the Lancashire Archers the fame of that great victory is generally owned, wherein the king of Scotland was slain, and the principal of his nobility and gentry had the same fate, or were taken prisoners." The Victoria History of Lancashire describes him as a "turbulent and lawless man," and details various quarrels and assaults in which he was involved. His will refers to his wife and four unnamed younger sons and four daughters.
