JOHN BRATTAIN

1996:
"John was a farmer. He was listed in the 1779 tax list of
Randolph Co. on William Millikan's list and paid taxes on 400
acres (10 a. only improved), 3 horses, and 5 cattle. On 23
Oct 1782 he received patent to this 400 acres, being located
on Muddy Creek and the south side of Deep River in Randolph
Co. adjoining lands of Thomas and Samuel Clark (Randolph Co.
Deeds 1:15). John and his wife Rachel deeded 220 acres
located on Muddy Creek to their son Robert Bratton on 21 Sep
1784 (Randolph Co. Deeds 2:80). These lands are located
northwest of present day Randleman. John made his will
verbally to his son Robert, his son-in-law Samuel Clark, and
his friend John Moore on 21 Jul 1784. The will was probated
in Dec 1784 (Randolph Co. Wills 1:18). Legacies went to his
son Robert, his son-in-law Samuel Clark, and John Moore. His
wife was to receive the household goods; she was to live with
her son or daughter if she survived him. John directed his
land to be equally divided between his grandsons John Clark
and John Brattain. His son Robert apparently acted as
executor of the estate because he deeded 88 acres on Muddy
Creek to John Clark, son of Samuel, "pursuant to the last
will and testament of John Braten, dec." (Randolph Co. Deeds
2:167). It is believed that John's father or grandfather
came to America from Scotland with three brothers. One
settled in Carolina; one in New York; and one in Maryland."
