Althought the exact date of Richard's immigration is not known, he may have been in America as early as 1634. In 1646 he moved from Wells,Maine, to Boston, MA. In 1651 they moved from Boston, MA, toWethersfield, CT. Settled in Hadley, CT, about 1659. He was a farmer and baker and operated a flour bolting mill. There is a picture of their homeon page 47 of the "History and Genealogy of the Montague Family of America". It was was taken down in 1830.
Richard was bornin Boveney in about 1614. "It is a small Hamlet, picturesquely situated upon the river Thames, 7 miles from Windsor, 23from London. The date of his emigration to America is unknown, but the record in the Herald's College, London, states that Peter (his son) was inAmerica in 1634. In the case of Peter, the court records at Richmond,Va., state that he entered land in Virginia in 1637. But, if Richard cameas early as 1634, there remain 12 years which are shrouded in obscurityfor no certain knowledge of him has been obtained until the year 1646. At which date Richard removed from Wells, Maine, to Boston, his wife being received into the first church, Boston, by letter of dismission fromWells, Maine.
Third son of Peter Montague of Boveny, parish of Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England, and wife Ellenor Allen.
Arrived on the Speedwell in 1634, lived inWells, Maine, in 1646; lived inBoston; lived in Wethersfield, Ct. (1651-1659); lived in Hadley, Massachusetts, 1680. Offices: selectman 1671,1677; freeman, 1680; Clerk of Writs, 1681. Around 1637 married Abigal Downing, daughter of Rev. Dr.Downing. A number of his descendents occur in this timeline.
The town of Wells, however, was not settled until 1637. If Richard was inNew England previous to 1637, it seems probable that he went to Wells, Maine from some of the other settlements, perhaps from Boston where hemay have first landed. This opinion was somewhat certified by the recordof the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It states that a certain Griffin Montague, who was living in 1635 at Brooklyne (then apart of Boston),removed about 1637 to Wells, Maine and settled at Cape Porpoise, a few miles distant, though no connection between him and Richard Montague has been found.
Landing at Boston, it is possible that he removed to Salem previous to going to Wells, Maine, for it is known that his wife was at one time amember of the Salem Church. Again the name of Richard Montague occurs in a list of Freemen in Marblehead the 19th of May, 1680. Marblehead at the time was a part of Salem and, although living in Hadley in 1680, his name may have been originally entered upon that list during his residence inSalem and not publisheduntil 1680. At all events, if that records does not refer to him, it isnot known to whom it could refer. There certainly were not two persons of that name in New England at that time.
He was twice a Selectman in Hadley -- in 1671 and in 1677. In March of1681 he was made clerk of writs.
Richard Montague was born about 1615 in Boveny, Buckinghamshire, England. He resided between 1640 and 1646 in Wells, York, Maine. He resided about 1646 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. He was abetween 1646 and 1660 in Miller and Baker, Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. He resided in 1651 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. He resided about 1660 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He was between 1660 and 1681 a miller, maker and farmer in, Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He signed a will on 8Jul 1681 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He named his wife,Abigail, and son, John, as executors.
Richard Montague was a baker, but there was not much demand for his services in Hadley, except in the Indian war.
Witnessed by Joseph Smith and PettSitton He died on 14 Dec 1681 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He has reference number 614. Parents: Peter Montague and Ellen Allen. He was married to Abigail Downing about 1
