Robert W. WHITE is the 4th great-grandfather of U.S. President JohnAdams.
!SOURCE: Vivian M. Lumbard (at vmlumbard@aol.com) on her Rootsweb Site.]
Robert White, was considered a rich man for his time, and this is fullyverified byhis will. Robert's will was dated May 27, 1617, and indicateshe lived for considerable time in the parish and was quite wealthy. Hegave to support the poorof Messing, and to Rev. Richard Rogers, anon-conformist, and Rev. BartholomewScrivener, an established churchminister. Also, Robert was accounted a rich man and was referred to asayeoman. This was the old designation for an independentfarmer who ownedhis own land. This was not very common in the 1500's sincemost of theland was still under the control of the nobility or the church.Robertseems to have lived in the area of Shalford in Essex most of hislife and he is buried there.
"His will was dated may 27, 1617, and indicates he livedfor considerabletime in the parish and was quite wealthy. He gave to support the poor ofMessing, and to Rev. Richard ROGERS, a non-conformist, and Rev.Bartholomew SCRIVENER, an established church minister. Robert's willnames his wife and all his children. Son Daniel and wife Bridget werenamed executors, andJohn CHRISTMAS (Sr.) and William LEVETT werewitnesses. Also named are three sons in law (James BOWTELL, JosephLOOMIS, and William GOODWIN), Ralph BETT ('my kinsman and servant'), andJoseph DIGBIE (my servant). The three unmarried children, Bridget, Anna, and John, were bequeathed money on the condition that they obtain theconsent of their mother, and of Joseph LOOMIS and William GOODWIN, beforemarriage (100 marks to each daughter, and 200 marks to John). It ispossible that Daniel was the son of a first wife, prior to Robert'smarriage toBridget on Jun. 24, 1585 at Shalford, Essex."
1617 Last Will & Testament of Robert White
