Bought the MOUNTJOY estate from his brother, John.
SIR WALTER BLOUNT, so celebrated for his martial prowess in [p. 55]the warlike times of EDWARD III., RICHARD II., and HENRY IV., andimmortalized by the muse of Shakespeare for his devotion, even untodeath, to King HENRY. Sir Walter fell at the battle of Shrewsbury, 22June, 1403, wherein, being standard bearer, he was arrayed in the samearmour as his royal master, and was slain, according to the poet, insingle combat, by the Earl of Douglas, who had supposed he wascontending with the king himself.
In 1367 we find Sir Walter accompanying the BLACK PRINCE and hisbrother, the DUKE OF LANCASTER (John of Gaunt), upon the expeditioninto Spain to aid PETER THE CRUEL, King of Castile, and assisting on 3April in that year at the battle of Najore, which restored PETER tohis throne. Thenceforward for a seris of years, indeed until theprince's decease, he appears to have been immediately andconfidentially attached to the duke, having chosen his wife, whom hem. about the year 1372, from amongst the ladies in the suite ofCONSTANTIA OF CASTILE (eldest dau. of PETER, and his successor on thethrone, who became the royal consort of JOHN OF GAUNT) when theprincess visited England in 1369. In 1398 the duke granted 100 marks ayear to Sir Walter for the good services which had been rendered tohim by the knight and his wife, the Lady Sancia. The Lady Sancia'smaiden designation was DONNA SANCHA DE AYALA; she was the dau. of DONDIEGO GOMEZ DE TOLEDO, alcalde mayor and chief justice of Toledo, andnotario mayor or principal secretary of the kingdom of Castile, by hiswife, Inez Alfon DE AYALA, one of the most ancient and illustrioushouses in Spain. JOHN OF GAUNT, at his decease, appointed Sir Walterone of his executors, and bequeathed him a legacy of 100 points, £666s. 8d.
In 1374, Sir Walter's half-brother, Sir John BLOUNT, of Sodington, conveyed to him numerous manors, which he had inherited from hismother, Isolda, heiress of the MOUNTJOY family. In 1381 he becameproprietor, by purchase, of the large estates of the BAKEPUIZ family,in cos. Derby, Stafford, Leicester, and Hertford. In 1385 he obtaineda charter for a fair and free warren in his demesne lands at Barton, and other manors in Derbyshire. In 1399 he was ranger of NeedwoodForest and knight of the shire for co. Derby. By his wife DonnaSancha, who survived him, and lived until 1418.
Immortalized by Shakespeare. Burke states, "the heroic Sir WalterBlount, so celebrated for his martial prowess in the warlike times ofEdward III and Henry IV." Sir Walter fell at the battle of Shrewsbury,June 22, 1403, wherein, being standard bearer, he was arrayed in thesame style of armour as his royal master and was slain in singlecombat by Earl Douglas who believed he was in combat with the kinghimself. In 1367, Sir Walter accompanied the Black Prince and the Dukeof Lancaster (John of Gaunt) upon the expedition into Spain to aidPeter the Cruel, King of Castile, and was at the battle of Marjara onApril 3, 1367, which restored Peter to his throne. He married, about1372, the Donna Sancha de Ayala, daughter of Don Diego Gomez deToledo, alcalde mayor and chief justice of Toledo, and notario mayor,or principal secretary of the kingdom of Castile, by his wife InezAlfon de Ayala, one of the most ancient and illustrious houses ofSpain. The Donna Sancha was one of the ladies in waiting in the suiteof Constancia of Castile, eldest daughter of Peter the Cruel, laterQueen, succeeding her father, and still later consort of John ofGaunt. Sir Walter was one of the executors of the estate of John ofGaunt and a beneficiary to the amount of 66 pound: 6: 8. In 1374, SirWalter's half brother, Sir John Blount, of Sodington, conveyed to himnumerous manors, which he had inherited from his (John's) mother,Isolde, heiress of the Mountjoys. By his wife Sancha, who lived until1418, his second son was Sir Thomas Blount.
