[11616]
Benjamin Sawyer was the son of James Sawyer and his first wife, Mary Garrison
in Mecklenburg County, N.Car. He was born 28 June 1776, and was orphaned at
the age of twelve (l2) when his father died on 3l Dec. l788. His mother had
died previously, and the court appointed guardians, Thomas Alexander and Elijah
Alexander, for Benjamin, his brother DavID, and sister Mary, and also their
half brother James (born of Hannah Haynes, James 2nd wife) until they became of
age. In l797, Benjamin, his brother, and half brother all moved to Logan Co.
KY., where they settled on land they patented as original settlers. Each
married Henderson sisters and raised their respective families there in Logan
County, Ky. Benjamin Sawyer married Elizabeth Henderson on 24 Dec l800 and
they had 12 children, two of which died in infancy. When Benjamin was 79 years
of age in l855, he had a partial attack of paralysis and gradually became
bed-rIDden, getting feebler and more helpless each year until in l875 at the
advanced age of ninety nine years, amID relations of the fourth generation, he
quietly fell asleep, almost on the very spot he settled seventy eight years
before. He is buried in the Old Salem Cemetery just outsIDe Auburn, Ky. as is
his wife, there besIDe him.
