[13081] Julia Dent Grant (wife of 5th cousin, 5x removed)

Quite naturally, shy young Lieutenant Grant lost his heart to friendly Julia; and made his love known, as he said himself years later, "in the most awkward manner imaginable." She told her side of the story--her father opposed the match, saying, "the boy is too poor," and she answered angrily that she was poor herself. The "poverty" on her part came from a slave- owner's lack of ready cash.

Daughter of Frederick and Ellen Wrenshall Dent, Julia had grown up on a plantation near St. Louis in a typically Southern atmosphere. In memoirs prepared late in life--unpublished until 1975--she pictured her girlhood as an idyll: "one long summer of sunshine, flowers, and smiles. . . . "She attended the Misses Mauros' boarding school in St. Louis for seven years among the daughters of other affluent parents. A social favorite in that circle, she met "Ulys" at her home, where her family welcomed him as a West Point classmate of her brother Frederick; soon she felt lonely without him, dreamed of him, and agreed to wear his West Point ring.

Julia and her handsome lieutenant became engaged in 1844, but the Mexican War deferred the wedding for four long years. Their marriage, often tried by adversity, met every test; they gave each other a life- long loyalty. Like other army wives,"dearest Julia" accompanied her husband to military posts, to pass uneventful days at distant garrisons. Then she returned to his parents' home in 1852 when he was ordered to the West.

Ending that separation, Grant resigned his commission two years later .Farming and business ventures at St. Louis failed, and in 1860 he took his family--four children now--back to his home in Galena, Illinois. He was working in his father's leather goods store when the Civil War called him to a soldier's duty with his state's volunteers. Throughout the war, Julia joined her husband near the scene of action whenever she could.

After so many years of hardship and stress, she rejoiced in his fame as a victorious general, and she entered the White House in 1869 to begin, in her words, "the happiest period" of her life. With Cabinet wives as her allies, she entertained extensively and lavishly. Contemporaries noted her finery, jewels and silks and laces. Upon leaving the White House in 1877, the Grants made a trip around the world that became a journey of triumphs. Julia proudly recalled details of hospitality and magnificent gifts they received.

But in 1884 Grant suffered yet another business failure and they lost all they had. To provide for his wife, Grant wrote his famous personal memoirs, racing with time and death from cancer. The means thus afforded and her widow's pension enabled her to live in comfort, surrounded by children and grandchildren, till her own death in 1902. She had attended in 1897 the dedication of Grant's monumental tomb in New York City where she was laid to rest. She had ended her own chronicle of their years together with a firm declaration: "the light of his glorious fame still reaches out to me, falls upon me, and warms me."

[8645] ALFRED THE GREAT, KING OF ENGLAND

Alfred was also known as the "Great King of the West Saxons." He reigned871-899 and prevented the Danish conquest of England, defeating them atEdington(878) after a campaign of guerrila warfare. After his victory heallowed the Danes to keep their conquests in Mercia and East Angliaprovided that Guthrum, their King, was converted to Christianity. Alfred built a navy of Warships to defend the south coast against further Danishinvasions (885-86; 892-96) and protected Wessex with a chain offortifications. He took London and made it the capital (886), thus gaining control of all England except the Danish areas. He is considered the greatest English King and the founder of England's Civilization and Nationality. He wrote the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle the first written history in a modern language and founded Oxford University.

The only King of England ever to receive the Honorific "the Great." Protected Wessex with a chain of fortifications. Est. navy (885-886, 892-896) to defend the south coast. Took London(886) thus gaining control of all England except the Danishareas. Organized the militia, compiled a code of laws. Built schools & monasteries, invited scholars to live at court. Personally led troops in charge at victory over Vikings at Ashdown "One of the greatest men in history." A good scholar who translated many books. His laws were the 1st that made no diff. betw. English & Welsh peoples. Reigned 871-899. Crowned King at Winchester in 871. Directed campaign of guerrilla warfare against the Danes. Prevented Danish conquest of England, defeating them at Eddington. Allowed the Danes to keep their conquests in East Anglia & Mercia.

From Wantage, http://www.oxlink.co.uk/wantage/index.html King Alfred was born in 849 AD in Wantage at a time when it was an important Saxon centre. The town buildings are mostly 17th and 18th century with narrow cobbled streets and passages.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul, part of which is 13th centurycontains tombs of the Fitzwarren family into which Dick Whittington -four times Lord Mayor of London - married. Wantage lies at the foot ofthe Downs and there are numerous racing stables in surrounding villages.Nearby is the historic, probably pre-Roman, Ridgeway track running from Ashbury to Streatley on the Thames.

Wantage is also in the heart of an area of high technology close to AEA Technology, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Culham Laboratory, EssoResearch Centre and the Williams Motor Racing Centre.

The town is undergoing great change with a new shopping centre about tobe built. The "in town" supermarket will be a useful addition to theshops in Wantage. The town centre is being refurbished and the TownCouncil are keen to see new shops and businesses move into the town andthe nearby Wantage Business Park.

Wantage has a thriving social life with many clubs and localorganizations. Music is important with a brass band in the first divisionand an operatic society. A month long festival of music and arts is heldin June and July. There is a Dickensian Evening before Christmas whenshops open late and the Town Mayor and town Crier lead the townspeopleand visitors around the town.

John Betjeman, Poet Laureate, lived in the town for many years and wrotea number of poems about Wantage and the surrounding areas for example"Wantage Bells" and "On Leaving Wantage". There is a strong localcampaign to create a Betjeman Memorial Park which would include a statueand display several of the poets better known works.

King Alfred already has a statue, commissioned by Lord Wantage, anddesigned and carved in 1877 by Count Gleichen, (a cousin of QueenVictoria) it stands the town centre. On the base of the statue thefollowing words are found:

Alfred found learning dead and he restored it Education neglected and he revived it The laws powerless and he gave them force The church debased and he raised it The land ravaged by a fearful enemy

[8644] Succeded His Brother Ethelred I In 871. Crowned At Winchester
