Katherine Courtenay married 1 Sir St Clare Pomeroy m2 Thomas Rogers ofBradford on Avon Som,serjeant at law, m 3 Sir Wm Huddesfield. ThomasRogers was a jumped up lawyer from nowhere and it would seem unlikelythat Sir Philip Courtenay and Elizabeth Hungerford would have agreed tosuch a valueless first marriage. From the Librarian of Lincolns Inn theinformation Thomas Rogers was admitted, almost certainly in 1454, "ofBristowe ", and was a Lincolns Inner until appt serjeant at law in 1478,and died in the same year. He married 1 Cecily Bessils dau and co heir ofWm Bessils of Bradford on Avon, and had two sons William and John (laterof Sutton Valence , Kent,). And 2 married Katherine widow of Sir SPomeroy. I cannot be certain but, Cannington only comes into the pictureat the dissolution of the monasteries when it was given/awarded toThomas
s grandson Edward Rogers. The Bradford property and theColyngbourne Valence Wilts property went to William, Thomas's eldest son,and he (VCH Wilts) gave the reversion to his half brother George Rogers, son of Thomas and Katherine Courtenay. On the brass at Shillingford comemmorating Sir Wm Huddesfield and Katherine, three children are depicted alongside the kneeling figure of Katherine, who is a suitable three paces behind the kneeling armoured figure of Sir Wm.
Lincoln's Inn, which occupies most of the rectangle formed by HighHolburn on the north, Carey Street and the Royal Courts of Justice on thesouth, Chancery Lane on the east and Lincoln's Inn Fields on the west, isone of the four Inns of Court of London. The Inns of Court were unincorporated bodies of lawyers defining the requirements for a Barristerto meet the Bar - sort of like the American Bar Association, and the oldest - going back to 1422, the others being Inner Temple 1501, MiddleTemple 1505, and Gray's Inn 1569.
